Former MLB pitcher Dave Roberts dead at 64

I remember Roberts. He and Clay Kirby were the 1-2 pitching combo for the Padres in their infant years. His 14-17 2.10 ERA year with the 71 Padres was truly outstanding. For the Padres went 61-100 that year. Roberts was a journeyman but one able to win over 100 ML... [Full Story]

Former Houston Astros reliever Dave Smith dead at 53

He died of a heart attack Wednesday. I remember Smith very well, especially his work in the 1986 NLCS against the New York Mets. He was a underrated reliever who didn't gain much notoriety except in 1986. RIP.... [Full Story]

100 Years....And Counting?

Where's Steve Bartman when you need him? Down 2-0 to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series, the Chicago Cubs could use an excuse--any excuse, really--to blame for their terrible play as they teeter on the brink of playoff elimination. The Cubs have been out hit, out... [Full Story]

Chicago Cubs Carlos Zambrano throws a no-hitter

It was the first one for the franchise since 1972. From AP- Carlos Zambrano pitched the first no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs in 36 years, returning from a sore rotator cuff to shut down the Houston Astros 5-0 Sunday night in a game relocated because of Hurricane Ike. "I guess... [Full Story]

Leave Steve Bartman Alone!

Poor Steve Bartman. The past just won't let the guy be. And neither will the media. Months after saying he wouldn't have caught the ball that Bartman allegedly interfered with during the 2003 NLCS, Moises Alou denies ever telling Sport Illustrated reporter Jim Litke that he wouldn't have caught the... Steve Bartman not to blame, Moises Alou says five years later

I seem to recall Alou was hopping mad back in 2003. From the Chicago Tribune- Any holdovers still blaming Steve Bartman should let the infamous Cubs fan off the hook, Moises Alou says. The former Cubs left fielder, now with the Mets, said he wouldn't have caught the now-infamous foul... [Full Story]

An exercise in futility?

Today’s quote pretty much sums up exactly what I was thinking while watching yesterday’s 4-0 lead somehow evolve into a 7-6 loss to the lowly (not as lowly as last year, but still lowly) Reds in Cincinnati. As usual, it’s from the Chicago Tribune. After a 7-6 loss to the Reds... [Full Story]

So Long Sammy!

Even though I'm a Cubs fan, I never liked Sammy Sosa. It was especially during the days of his home run chase with Mark McGwire back in 1998 that I grew to dislike him. While most of Chicago embraced or fell in love with his seemingly likeable personality, I thought... [Full Story]

Whither Ryno?

Ah yes, it's Hall of Fame election time again. Hopefully this will be the year my all-time favorite player, Ryne Sandberg, gets his nod. Read what ESPN know-it-alls have to say about the subject here. A sample, from Tim Kurkjian:The Sandberg situation perplexes me. He was the premier second baseman... [Full Story]

Connecting with Red Sox Nation

So the Red Sox won the World Series. I guess that hadn’t happened in a while. Seriously, unless you spent the last three weeks clinically dead, you have to have heard at least somewhere (Kristie saw it on the Weather Channel) about Boston’s ability to finally win a World Series... [Full Story]

They didn't win -- it's a shame

THIRD PLACE — “Do they still play the blues in Chicago when baseball season rolls around?” Steve Goodman asked that eternal question before his untimely death in 1984. He continued by asking “When the snow melts away, do the Cubbies still play in their ivy-covered burial ground?” Sort of. You... [Full Story]

Say it is So(sa)

As hard as I wished for the baseball gods to deliver Greg Maddux to the Cubs last off-season, I think I’m pulling even harder for the newest rumor to turn into truth. The Cubs may be done with Sammy Sosa. Here, I’ll say it again: The Cubs may be done... [Full Story]

Heads or Tails

Well, Bill Simmons has done it again. Just as I was trying to come up with the words to sum up my feelings about the 2004 Cubs season, The Sports Guy posted a column today about the Red Sox, where he hit almost every point I eventually would have made,... [Full Story]

Race to the finish

There are 20 games left in the Cubs’ season. Just 20. That’s just a bit more than 12 percent of the season, but it’s gotten to the point — just a half game back of San Francisco in the Wild Card race — where every game the Cubs have from... [Full Story]

Dog Days

These are trying times for Cubs fans. On one hand, the 25 men on the roster represent, by far, the best collection of overall talent since the team’s last real heyday of the late 1960s. The team is in post-season contention in mid-August for the second year in a row... [Full Story]

Baseball Buzz

Here's what some prominent (and not-so prominent, I guess) baseball writers have to say about the trade that brought Nomar Garciaparra to Chicago: ■ Rick Morrisey of the Chicago Tribune:I'm not sure about a lot of things when it comes to the Cubs, but they keep offering reasons to believe.... In-freaking-sane

The Cubs just got Nomar Garciaparra without having to deal Matt Clement. Are you kidding me? This is a banner day in Cubs history, unless, of course, Francis Beltran goes on to be Cy Young. My first thoughts: 1. I don't plan to listen to any more Cubs games on... [Full Story]

Baseball's Priorities

Let's review. Kerry Wood blows a gasket against an umpire over legitimately awful balls and strikes material. Suspension: 5 games (under appeal). Carlos Zambrano hits Jim Edmonds with two pitches (only one of which was clearly intentional) and makes an ass of himself by screaming at Edmonds after the big... [Full Story]

Awful weekend

What a crappy weekend for Cubs fans. The relative euphoria of Friday’s Kerry Wood-fueled 5-1 win over the Phillies faded quickly as fundamental shortcomings reared up and cheesed all over the Northside Nine on Saturday. Then came Sunday’s game, in which the Cubs were no hit for eight innings before... [Full Story]

Random Thoughts

Thoughts going into this weekend’s three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies: • Two convincing wins over the Reds (at least once convincing, I guess) don’t make up for the humiliations against St. Louis. They do, however, put the Cubs back on track for the wild card race. I won’t make... [Full Story]

Brutal performance

Collapse. There is no better word to describe the Cubs’ play in the recent two-game series against the Cardinals. The Cubs lost every aspect of the series. The Cardinals hit better, pitched better and, worst of all, were simply better people than the Cubs. I’m willing, with just a bit... [Full Story]
