Should the Dallas Cowboys fire Wade Phillips?

His team got slaughtered yesterday in the final regular season week of the 2008 NFL football.

The Philadelphia Eagles overcame daunting odds to capture an NFC wild-card spot with a dominating 44-6 victory over the Cowboys on Sunday. So much for all that preseason Super Bowl hype in Dallas -- America's Team can start its vacation plans early.

The Eagles (9-6-1) will play at NFC North champion Minnesota (10-6) next weekend.

The Eagles who essentially needed a miracle to make the playoffs, got one. Dallas on the other hand continues to under perform and won't be taking part in this year's playoffs.

My friend James Joyner writing about his favorite football team says-

Today, faced with a win-and-you're-in game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillips' team came out as flat as I've ever seen them. Surely, Phillips can't still be employed after this.

Of course, this outcome was not only predictable but predicted. In a January 2007 piece on the mere speculation that Jones was thinking about hiring him ("Wade Phillips Top Choice to Replace Parcells?") I wrote:

The man has had four NFL head coaching jobs, including two interim stints, going back to 1985:

Saints (Interim) 1985
Broncos 1993-94
Bills 1998-2000
Falcons (Interim) 2003

Guess how many of those teams he took to the Super Bowl. If you guessed Zero, you were right.

Now, guess how many playoff wins he had? If you guessed Zero again, pat yourself on the back.

He has a career coaching record of 48-39 and is 0-3 in the playoffs.

Wade Freakin' Phillips?!

Phillips was every bit the bad choice James predicted him to be two years ago. I think Dallas should fire him.

Jerry Jones deserves to keep Phillips as a form of punishment for Jones being such a lousy owner and general manager.

Why can't Jerry Jones deflate his swollen prostrate ego and admit he knows all about rapeing everybody for a dollar ,but doesn't know dick about coaching ! Spend some of our money and hire a REAL coach back. Jimmy Johnson probably would tell him to KISS HIS A__ , but come on Jerry ,get down on those spindley old knees and DO IT ! YOU CAN"T COACH FOR SH_T!!!!!

As a loyal Dallas Cowboy fan I've made excuse after excuse during the course of this season on how my boys have under performed. Waiting on them to turn it on, put the differences aside and simply get down to playin QUALITY football that day never came. The soap opera that was our season was just embarrassing to say the least and yesterday was simply the cherry. But i do believe will can build upon this at point there really is nowhere to go but up this is one of our lowest points having so much promise at the beginning of the season and ruining it by simply not getting out of our own way. Changes must be done to ensure this does not repeat itself and it starts with Mr. Candyland Wade Phillips and trickles down to Tony "I don't need da ball no mo'"Romo yah i said it get rid of ROMO he's a gunslinger we cant afford did you know this season he had 1 only 1 game where he didn't have a turnover in the words of mike singletary "CAN"T DO IT" to many weapons on this team to be this jacked up you really hate to play the blame game but hey sometimes its the way and baby there's enough to go around from Terrel and his constant whining of wanting the football to Jerry questioning our players toughness to jason garrett not getting roy williams going in our offense to pac man fighting his own bodyguard in a restroom and less we forget the there keeping the ball from us controversy look entertainment is the name of the biz but dang when some games every now and then just to shake things up in closing we need a smart offseason to break this big 3 curse and never repeat this greek tragedy again

Its not public yet.. but im hearing phillips is fired.. T.O. will get the boot. Romo as far as i know will stay. Dispite his get away with jessica Simpson last year in mexico resulted the loss of the play off against the giants. Coaches wasnt strict and should of been and kept them all thinking and focusing on the game instead of a drinking get-away... jerry jones is getting older and isnt getting wiser. cowboys may be an american team, but since Phillips been in as a head coach, that team isnt acting as an american team. Giants have more control of their teammates and even with burress's gun shot wound, they still pulling through better than the cowboys did this year regardless. Lions and cowboys should start hanging out together.

Romo just is not our answer for the cowboys time to look somewhere else trying getting some of those released Qbs a chance byron leftwhich etc. Wade cant control a team he is not a head coach just coordnatier garrett play calling is great at first of the season later sucks if he so great none of his former teams went to the playoffs take the dolphins but now there in the playoffs were not time to clean house because were moving get rid of the old crap we dont need

There is only one problem with the Cowboys . . . . Jerry Jones. Until he sells the team to someone without the last name of Jones, expect more of the same. There is no amount of player and/or coaching changes that will overcome the micro-managing, doddling, and stupidity of Jerry Jones. In the meantime, hit him in the only place it will hurt, his pocket book. Sell your Cowboy tickets and buy hockey tickets or NASCAR tickets.

for the first time in my life i am embarrased to be a cowboys fan...did they bother to actually study any films or have an actual game plan besides romo running around looking for recievers too lazy to run proper routes..
you do play these teams twice a year you should know them and their ability inside and out..or have you been to distracted by the freakin circus that the owner created and allowed
romo ..highly overated ,undisiplined never will be
maybe he should try holding the ball longer against the blitz ..oh wait my bad thats his style seen it from several went nowhere QB's
anyone remember randall cunningham or who let the dogs out vick...doesnt work never did never will
t.o...mouth to big for age and ability to get open..time to go for you
roy williams...lazy routes ..try reading the play book next season
pacman ...self hyped loser from day one..should have made him remove his uniform and take a cab home at halftime
jason garret...a never was with no answers
wade phillips ..just a spineless yes man too jerry..his life time record is well below mediocre
and was more than a bit confused and without control
offense has no leader on or off the field just a bunch of me me me loud mouths
defense..shows up every couple of games
who must go ..hell i would have fired phillips at half time

Wade Phillips isn't the problem. JASON GARRETT? What about that loser? Jerry Jones allowed him to speak with the Detroit Lions to get Garrett out of Dallas. Thtas where he belongs, DETROIT!! The defense played well all year. Good enough to go far in the playoffs. The offensive play calling was horrible. WTF happened. All the superstar pro-bowler weapons and we couldn't even get a first down!! Gimme a break!! Wade Phillips has no say on the offense so it's not his fault. Get rid of that douchbag Jason Garrett!! JASON GARRETT LOST IT ALL. THE SEASON. THE SUPERBOWL. THIS TEAM WAS CAPABLE OF WINNING 15 GAMES THIS YEAR. This team look's better on paper than last year NE Patriots. What the hell happened??

If so Wade Phillips does go, I think Mike Shannahan will be the perfect choice. I know Jerry Jones doesn't want an older coach but he is very close to Mike and Mike is a mastermind when it comes to offensive play calling.

Stick with the same defense and get a new offensive coordinater along with Shannahan and things should go well for Dallas. Plus make a few good moves in the offseason why you're at it Jerry!!

I'm going to the Home-Opener in the New Texas Stadium, can't wait!!!! (Rumors tell it is going to be Sunday Night Football: Week 2)

Wade Phillips shouldn't be fired because his players act like spoiled brats. Instead of doing their jobs, Romo is busy running off with Jessica Simpson and T.O. is crying on Sportscenter. These players are far too concerned with the publicity that they receive and, in turn, are acting selfishly and not playing as a cohesive team.

Joe:

WIthout leadership, the cowboys are going nowhere. If you look at last year, if all games ended in the first half, we would have about the same record as this year. It took a first half beating to motivate those players. There are a few coaches I think would fit with the dallas cowboys: Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden, and even Pete Carroll. Common denominator in these coached is that they have control of the team (not the players). I think the cowboys need leadership. To be honest, I couldn't believe Jerry Jones hired a coach who was winless in the playoffs in the first place. Fire Wade Phillips. Fire Jason Garrett. Fire Brian Steward. Fire Dave Campo. They all underachieved, and had a piss poor gameplan. The reason Romo looked like a "gunslinger" was because their gameplan sucked balls and he had to improvise.

ted Cardoso:

It's blatantly obvious our problem this year was poor coaching in all three phases of the game, but especially on offense and special teams. On the offensive side, there was never an adjustment to counter the constant blitzing we saw at the end of the season. I'm not a coach, but even I know that one can try maximum protection packages, screens, shuttle passes, 3 step drops, etc., to counter blitzes. I can't recall seeing more than a couple of these tried during the last 4 games. We simply tried the same failing strategy time after time, and repeatedly exposed Romo. In the NFL, defenses are going to continue their blitzes until you burn them. Also, when players make a mistake once or twice, then it's their fault. When it occurs repeatedly, however, it's the coaches' (i.e., teachers') fault. For example, there were multiple instances this season where our defensive linemen were offsides, and several times this led to key, drive-perpetuating, automatic 1st downs. After the second game this problem arose, the coaches should have specifically addressed the issue, and indeed, practiced with refs on the field, specifically asking the practice quarterback to alter his cadence in an attempt to draw them off, until that problem was solved. I doubt this ever happened. Look, football is the one professional sport where coaching makes the most difference, as opposed to sports such as baseball and track & Field. Every year we see ample evidence of this. This past year alone, we saw the difference Parsells and Sporano made in Miami with their presence, and coincidently, the effect their absence had on the Cowboys. Look at Saban in Alabama. He nearly won a National Championship with the same talent multiple coaches in the past decade couldn't win more than 6 games with. Look what's happened in San Diego after Schottenheimer was fired and Turner was hired. Football is a chess match, where you anticipate and counter your opposition's moves. We didn't do either very well this season, and unless the coaching staff changes, expect the same next year. It would behoove us to remember the following Einstein quote: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Jerry finally has exactly what he was looking for all along.....a mouthpiece, someone who is a shell, a puppet. Jerry is a frustrated football coach who doesn't have the balls to just take the reigns. Who are we to say that Jones needs to sell he has the money we don't. But make rational decisions...I don't believe that the coaching staff was the problem...they are not out there playing the BOYS are they are the ones that controlled the field...drops,interceptions.penaltys. Poor me give me the ball and I will make it happen...WELL IT DIDN"T HAPPEN. Jason Garrett does need to go Wade needs to stay..as far as Romo he fell apart when he met Jessica Simpson...maybe he just needs to be a husband and not a quarterback this seems to be where the strengths are...I am a loyal Cowboy fan and I will always support them but GET THE TEAM TOGETHER or you will never be winners and I hate that because we have great talent on our team US IT...

The Dallas Cowboys' problem... (Below threshold)
Palabear:

The Dallas Cowboys' problem is Jerry Jones believes he can pick talent and coach the team. Like Al Davis.

The truth is that Jimmy Johnson made great draft picks and so did Bill Parcells. They usually traded FOR draft picks not to GIVE them up. Roy Williams may be a good reciever but no player is worth mortgaging your future.

In fact I cannot think of one reach... Joey Galloway/Terry Glenn that has ever worked out for the Cowboys. Didn't he get cut at the start of the year? Man, we sure didn't need him back huh? Jerry Jones... ego never helps.

This has a LOT to do with Jerry Jones NOT understanding the team he has. Here's a rule he might want to adopt. No team is ONE player away from anything. You might be better or worse BUT you are NEVER going to vault over the top because of one person.

Then there is the question of knowing people. Jerry Jones does not appear to know people very well. I mean the man hangs out with Bandar Bush and runs an oil empire... his affinity for criminals is likely unavoidable.

Note that neither Parcells, nor Johnson picked up players with questionable character issues and Parcells even let one, Quincy Carter, go with those kinds of issues.

To be fair Michael Irvin had some off the field nonsense but nothing like T.O, or Pacman. Why would you bring those personalities into ANY locker room.

So there you go. Jerry needs to back off and let people who understand football do football. He and his sons have really made and will continue to make a mess of things. Why would anyone WANT to coach in such a place with such an owner?

The name won't carry the team forever. Ask the Detroit Lions who used to be something to fear and respect before the Fords REALLY got involved with their toy.

Big Time Cowboy Fan since the 70's:

Discipline, discipline, discipline, that's what our 'Boys lack! For once Jerry make the right move. Hire the right coach again! You need to make the move now while the proven talent is available, Shanahan, Holmgren, Cowher, ring a bell! You did once, remember JIMMY JOHNSON! We should have won 4 straight super bowls! Don't think for a minute that Switzer had something to do with the 3rd, he inherited Johnson's team. Just like Gruden inherited Dungy's super bowl team. It has been all down hill since, under achievement at it's best! It's a crying shame to let one of the most highly regarded, coveted and historic franchises to discenagrate. What is Jones trying to create in Dallas, A new version of the Raiders! You captured that coveted distinction being the most penalized team this year, Ridiculous! It's time to get back to the basics! Cut all the collateral damage and cancer now! Don't bring it in to the new stadium! Or, stay in denial and settle for mediocrity. It's your choice, it's not to late!
