Tampa Bay Rays Playoff Hopes Dim With Loss of Crawford, Longoria

Ouch. And ouch.

The Tampa Bay Rays, who have been one of the MLB's best stories this year as they continue to lead the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees in the AL East, suffered two big losses in recent days. OF Carl Crawford and 3B and Rookie of the Year contender Evan Longoria have both suffered wrist fractures.

According to CBS Sports, Crawford's break may require season-ending surgery. Longoria is out for at least 6 weeks, if not longer.

These are two huge bats in the Rays' lineup and they'll be sorely missed during the last month and a half of the season--particularly with the Red Sox only 4 games back.

A young, inexperienced team already facing the turbulent competitive waters of September baseball, now find themselves in a Bering Sea world of hurt with Crawford and Longoria gone.

It's cup check time for the young, upstart Rays.

CBS: Crawford has a "subluxation in his wrist".

A subluxation[1] is an incomplete or partial dislocation (Latin: luxatio)[2] of a joint or organ (Wiki)

So you're right. Does it make a difference in the grand scheme of things because he's still out 6-8 weeks and likely longer? No, dumbass, it doesn't.

Fact Check:

Where in the hell did you see that Longoria is out for "at least six weeks, if not longer"? He's on the 15-day DL, and they're expecting him to return in under 3 weeks, as ESPN news reports (I know, I know, they cheated by actually checking their facts and talking to people close to the story before making idiotic claims). So that's two demonstrably wrong facts you've put in here.

Nice reporting. I hope you have other career options?

Fact Check:

Also, calling one of the 4 people that actual read this garbage a "dumbass" for calling you out for misreporting what was actually a rather crucial fact is clearly the hallmark of excellent sports reporting. You would have sounded less like of a child for calling him out for leaving the "b" out of "dumbshit". Wrist fractures and tendon dislocations are completely different ballgames, requiring different rehabilitation and causing different long-term effects on the player. So, no, just because you accidentally got the "6-8 weeks" part right doesn't excuse you from misreporting facts.

Oh, yeah, and more evidence that you're an idiot on the Longoria claim:

Have fun coming up with a "You would know, ringmaster"- caliber zinger that you can pat yourself on the back for for the next few months.

Fact Check:

Ah, what the hell. I'm in a great mood this morning, so I'm just gonna pile on. I'll pre-empt your retort of "those articles were published after mine" and that you reported with the best information available. I see now where you got your info (from the Fantasy baseball blurb on Longoria, which reports correctly that broken bones take over 6 weeks to heal. Longoria, however, does not have any broken bones. He has a fracture). Regardless, a responsible reporter would not use the declarative statement "Longoria IS out for at least six weeks, if not longer" (emphasis on the declarative obviously mine). A responsible reporter would have said "Though Longoria is still undergoing testing to uncover the full extent of his injury, a worst-case scenario for the Rays could see Longoria out for at least six weeks, if not longer". You can play with the wording (Ooh! Include some of that epic Bering Sea- quality imagery that almost made me spit my morning brew all over the screen), but the lesson should be the same: Your brand of publish-first, fact-check later reporting is what keeps the internet from reaching its full potential as a news source.

Dear Mr. Fact Checker:... (Below threshold)

Dear Mr. Fact Checker:

At the time of this writing, and according to CBS Sports, Longoria was thought to be out 6-8 weeks. The site has now been updated and reads:

The Sports Xchange reports that Rays Executive VP Andrew Friedman said it was "very reasonable" to think 3B Evan Longoria would return to the lineup by Sept. 1, but the Rays would have a much better idea in two weeks when another set of X-rays are taken on his fractured right wrist.

Great for Longo! I hope he IS better that soon. I really do. I want nothing more than to see the Rays beat the Red Sox for the AL East title.

Both of your reports have updated my information in the interim. Fantastic. That does NOT make what I originally "reported" wrong; the information at the the time of the writing was obviously being held incomplete. But that does NOT make me wrong. Which leads me to....

Regardless, a responsible reporter would not use the declarative statement "Longoria IS out for at least six weeks, if not longer" (emphasis on the declarative obviously mine)

I'm not a reporter; I'm a blogger. There are BIG differences, starting with getting PAID. I don't get pad.

And....

Your brand of publish-first, fact-check later reporting is what keeps the internet from reaching its full potential as a news source.

Blogs aren't "news" sources; they are "commentary and descriptions of events" etc. (Wiki) So don't bash me for my "reporting" skills when I'm not a reporter. Maybe in your little fact-checking endeavor you would've looked that up, thus saving yourself a fair amount of spewage.

Regardless of ALL those incredibly MINOR distractions, the fact remains that these injuries are unquestionably going to hurt the Rays playoff chances. That is ultimately the point of the article. A point you clearly missed because you were too busy being a nit.

If you want to argue that the injuries may not hurt the Rays, then great, please do so.

And just for giggles:... (Below threshold)

I'll pre-empt your retort of "those articles were published after mine" and that you reported with the best information available

BTW, this truly makes you look like an ass trying to cover his tracks. Especially in light of your bogus "fracture vs. break" non-argument.

Longoria is out for "at least six weeks" is correct. Check out the local newspapers and the ESPN news updates.
