Today, MLB.com has an article outlining the first week of the MLB season speculating what these early days of the season may portend for the rest of the season.
Uh, bunk.
It's MLB's job to promote their product and not talk negatively about their products (aka: teams). But I answer to a higher authority: The Baseball Gods.
So let's address MLB.com's issues point by point.
The Royals, Orioles and Cardinals are not better than any one thought Crickey, it's only 7 games, people. Yeah, bully for the Royals and Orioles for sweeping the Tigers and Mariners, respectively. Big deal. I repeat, 7 lousy games doth not a season make.
Yesterday's glory (aka: The Rockies) means nothing today True enough. But it doesn't mean they're an awful ballclub incapable of making the playoffs, either. Good hitting teams notoriously start out cold. It's a truism that pitchers are "ahead" of hitters coming out of spring training. No more is that more evident than with the Rockies, Tigers and Yankees. That ain't gonna continue. You can bank on it.
The Tigers might want to stop the presses Why? Because they've scored the fewest runs in the league and are 0-7 to start the season? Yes, Curtis Granderson is missed, but Clete Thomas (.429 BA) has been getting on base. It's Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Guillen who aren't hitting behind him. And no one in their right mind expects that trend to continue.
Kosuke Fukudome is not awed by the big leagues True enough. However, announcers are perplexed as how to pronounce his name without picking up a hefty FCC fine.
Jake Peavy is still The Man Very true. And he's better than Johan Santana the past two years.
This could be "The Year" for Chase Utley Some things are so obvious they're just sound dumb when you say them. Why write this?
Jason Kendall is back MLB.com's reasoning here is that if they get a solid year out of him, they'll "get over the hump". Give me a break. Kendall is not and never has been that kind of player. What crap analysis.
The Reds can pitch! Yup, when young pitchers like the Reds Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez make their first go around through the league, they'll look like the second coming of Fernando Valenzuela. Then the scouts will catch up to them. And so will the hitters. In the meantime, Aaron Harang is still the 4th best pitcher in the NL behind Peavy, Santana and Brandon Webb.
There's some sting in the Rays Tampa Bay definitely has the bats to stay in if not win a lot more games than it has in the past. That will be more the case when 3B superstud prospect Evan Longoria rightly takes place in The Bigs in a couple of weeks. However, It's their pitching that will keep them from getting anywhere.
Life without Bonds is hardMLB.com makes a valiant and admirable attempt to infer that the Giants (my team) woes are due to the lack of Barry Bonds' presence in the lineup. Phooey on that! This would be a horrible/awful/ridiculously bad team even if Bonds were n the lineup during his prime. Jayson Stark said the Giants will lose 100+ games this year. Wrong, Jayson. Try 108+. This ballclub is that bad.
OK, now for some of my observations:
There's something not right with the Mariners' Eric Bedard His lost some velocity off his fastball, that much is clear from the 2 starts I've seen him make. I've not seen one fastball hit 93MPH. Not good for a guy who's known for dealing between 94-97MPH.
Rick Ankiel is a good hitter That's not a joke. He's got more talent as a hitter than he ever did as a pitcher.
Pirates OF Nate McLouth will not continue hitting .400 In fact, you'll forget his name by May 10.
D-Backs 3B Mark Reynolds (5 HR and 12 RBI to lead the majors) is the next Albert Pujols! Not.
Twins OF Carlos Gomez and Astros OF Micahel Bourne will steal 95+ bases Probably not, but these two guys are sick fast. 70+ steals are not out of the question if they can keep getting on base.
Barry Zito flatout sucks $126 million for that pile of junkball throwing piece of flaky garbage? Dear Giants GM Brian Sabaen, what drugs were on when you signed him?
Peter F. needs to like better teams than the Giants and Oakland Raiders So true. And I blame my father. He raised me to rabid fans of theirs. Thanks a lot, Dad.
