As you have heard Donnie Walsh has just been named Knick's President. Knick fans finally rejoice now that the Knick's front office has someone with a fully functional brain. Luckily, that person also happens to now run the team. So what can Donnie do to save this laughing stalk some call a franchise? Step one, send Isiah Thomas packing. He has screwed up enough. He ran the CBA into the ground. Now he has done the same with the Knicks. Just ask yourself what "The Donald" would do. YOUR FIRED!!! Herb Williams, you are hired.
Donnie is smart enough to know there is no magic trade or free agent that can turn this team around. He should simply clean house. Over the summer Mark Cuban will be begging teams for a center. Trade Eddie Curry and Jared Jeffries for Erick Dampier, Eddie Jones, and their first round draft pick. Eddie Jones will be an expiring contract. Dampier will have 2 seasons left on his deal. Basically you can trade him or try and work out a buyout.
There are several teams that will make deals this summer to try and get over the hump. The Magic might be one of those teams. Jamal Crawford could be traded for Tony Battie, Brian Cook, and their 2008 first round draft pick. This gives the Knicks 3 first rounders with a major trading piece still on their roster (Zach Randolph).
Assuming the Bucks aren't one of the top picks they would consider trading for Randolph to try and keep Redd happy. The trade would be Dan Gadzuric, Desmond Mason, Awvee Storey, and their first round pick for Zach Randolph. I would suggest working buyouts and trades for all three.
These trades should purge the team of all the horrible habits Thomas has developed. Hopefully Donnie can work out a buyout for Marbury as well. Either way I wouldn't let him show up to training camp. The main holdovers from the former era would be Renaldo Balkman, Nate Robinson, David Lee, Wilson Chandler, and maybe Randolph Morris/Mardy Collins. Plus the Knicks can add to that roster four first round draft picks (and possibly one second rounder).
Can you imagine the Knicks with OJ Mayo, Darren Collison, Kevin Love, and Serge Ibaka or Alexis Ajinca on the roster next year? Well, I freakin' can. Add Richard Roby (as a second round pick) to that and you now have 11 players on the roster. Hopefully you can move Quentin Richardson and buyout Jerome James and Malik Rose. Then, just add some D-League players to fill out the roster. I nominate Dwayne Mitchell for one of those roster spots.
Could that team do any worse than the current one? I doubt it. Plus this is a way to truely rebuild for the future.
