Stan Kroenke & Mark Warkentien for WOMY

I would like to take a moment out of my day to make a very special nomination. When you see two people do such a "unique" job with an organization it does not go without notice. So today, I would like to nominate the majority owner (Kroenke) and his esteemed VP of Basketball Operations (Warkentien) for my annual WOMY award. Unfortunately, I doubt either will be able to attend since WOMY stands for Worst Owner and Management of the Year. Congratulations to the entire Denver Nugget staff.

Since Mr. Kroenke was so serious about winning he fired defensive minded head coach Jeff Bzdelik and general manager Kiki Vandeweghe. Bzdelik was fired because the team really didn't take him seriously and the Nuggets had some offensive woes. Now with George Karl they have some defensive woes (and serious ones). Kiki Vandeweghe really wasn't replaced with anyone. Technically the Nuggets are just a disorganized team without a steady hand at the helm. When you have a rich owner not wanting to go into the luxury tax and no clear leader in the front office you have a power struggle.

Take a quick visit to the Nugget's website to meet their management staff.

Owner: E. Stanley Kroenke
Advisor to the Nuggets: Bret Bearup
Vice President of Basketball Operations: Mark Warkentien
Vice President of Player Personnel: Rex Chapman
Director of Basketball Operations: Greg Knight

Bret Bearup is friend of Kroenke that basically forced himself into the Nuggets picture back when Kiki was the GM. Obviously Kiki wasn't happy with that, so that love triangle didn't last. With no clear leader in the front office and one guy (Bearup) who does god knows what, this leads me to the question. Who is responsible for the running the team? Who makes the decisions and takes the heat when things go wrong? Now on the court that is Melo, AI, and Karl. However in the front office all you will have is finger pointing. Well I think it is time to blame the person who created this mess. Stan Kroenke, when it comes to basketball, you are a fool.

If the Pistons would have passed on Darko the Nuggets never would have made the playoffs. The Nuggets would only have memories of Mutombo and the fast paced games of the 1980s as well. When you get a draft pick like Carmelo Anthony you must get young talent around him. The young talent the Nuggets have are JR Smith and Nene (out). The Nuggets instead decided to get a bunch of veterans to try and win now. AI was not the right guy to put around Melo when the Nuggets needed a two guard who could spread the floor and defend. However, you made the trade so lets put that in the past. Now the Nuggets are basically out of the playoffs and needing to make a deal badly. So what does Kroenke and Warkentien come up with to change the Nugget's fortune?

Taurean Green for Von Wafer was the big deadline deal. Seriously guys, is this a joke? The biggest deadline rumor was for Ron Artest. When you have the best small forward in the Western Conference already on your team do you really need to trade for the biggest headcase in the league? That was horrible idea number one. If you all remember back to a previous article, I suggested saving Nene and moving Najera for John Salmons instead. Out of all the deals on the table was that the best you could do? What about Vince Carter or Michael Redd? The Nuggets were too cheap to move their expiring contract (Najera) for a longer deal.

The good news is the Nuggets still are in the playoff hunt. If they get lucky and draw the Rockets or Hornets they might even get out of the first round, but they are not serious contenders.

Stan do us all a favor and hire Donnie Walsh this summer. Then get out of his way!
