Georgia Falls to Xavier 73-61

Georgia's miracle run finally ran out of gas but they didn't go quietly.

The Bulldogs hit 53% in the first half and went to the locker room up by nine. More importantly was Georgia's "tireless" swarming defense that held Xavier to 35% from the field.

"Tireless" is the operative word though, because in the send half it was abundantly clear that the Bulldogs were totally exhausted. Xavier, the far more talented and deep team, patiently circled and kept a tempo than ran Georgia down early in the second half.

These teams matched up better than most (including me) would have thought but Xavier's discipline was the real deciding factor. The Bulldogs went to the line only five times while Xavier took the charity toss a whopping 33 times.

The score is a bit deceiving as UGA was within 3 with just over a minute to play. Poor shooting by Georgia down the stretch and excellent free throw shooting by Xavier sealed it.

That's awesome! My brother... (Below threshold)
langtry:

That's awesome! My brother was the Xavier mascot (The Musketeer, or Muskie) back when (1989?) Xavier beat the (then) mighty Georetown Hoyas to join the remaining 8 teams. CBS broke into other games to show the last 30 seconds of the game as the was considered the buggest upset of that year's March Madness. When the buzzer finally went off, crowds surged onto the court, but I could still see my brother. How? Because the Muskie wears a giant white foam hat!

Thanks for the happy reminscences, Peter!
