Matt Hayes from Sporting News has a piece up that is in his words, "list of the best players in the game, pure and simple" in NCAA football.
As with all lists, there will be disagreement but this one is without a doubt the strangest I have seen in some time. Rather than dissect the entire list, I pulled out the quarterbacks. I don't know what criteria was used in the survey to come to this result but it sure seems curious when you look at the hard numbers.
The top quarterbacks, according to Hayes' survey are Pat White (WVa), Tim Tebow (UF), Chase Daniel (Mizzu), Sam Bradford (OK) and Matt Stafford (UGa). These are all fine players and at least four of the five will likely play QB in the NFL.
But let's look at the numbers, shall we? The idea that Pat White is above Tim Tebow is laughable and honestly he's likely #4 on this list at best. White is the only QB on the list to have less than 2500 yards passing (in his case, less than 1800 yards). Compare that with over 4300 for Daniel. He is also the only one with less than 15 touchdown passes. Compare that with Bradford's 36.
He did run for 14 touchdowns, so he accounted for 28 in total. That puts him #4 on the list, only ahead of Stafford. Counting rushing touchdowns gives Tebow a startling 55!
White's QB rating is a very solid 151.0 but it pales in comparison to Tebow's 172.5 and Bradford's 176.5.
Perhaps those surveyed were looking at where each quarterback would eventually lead their team by season's end? For some strange reason, the Big East is still a BCS conference and West Virginia has a good chance to win the conference but they do have Colorado on the road and Auburn at home.
Again, I have no idea what the criteria was but it certainly wasn't on anything reasonably quantifiable.
