Now here's a sport we talk about much at WizSports: skiing. But we have a great occasion to now.
American skier Bode Miller clinched his second overall World Cup skiing title in four years today. In a sport thoroughly dominated by Europeans, Miller becomes just the second American since the legendary Phil Mahre to capture multiple overall World Cup titles.
Mahre, a Northwest native, captured three consecutive World Cups from 1981-1983.
But it gets even better.
American skier Lindsey Vonn is poised to win the overall women's World Cup title over Germany's Marie Riesch if she can maintain her current 157-point lead in the standings.
If Vonn wins, she and Miller would become the first Americans since Mahre and Tamara McKinney in 1983--a full 25 years ago--to capture the overall titles in the same year.
Very cool!
Trust me, Miller winning is driving the Euros completely bonkers. Skiing is "their" sport, right behind soccer. Think of it this way: It's the equivalent of a German baseball team coming over and whopping up on the Yankees or the Red Sox. It just doesn't happen.
Way to go, Bode! And good luck, Lindsey!
As a former high school and college ski racer myself, man, this has me jazzed!
(Note: Miller split his relationship with the United States Ski Team over training issues. However, he still races as an American.)

Say, didn't Miller's "training issues" include his continually getting drunk and open marijuana use?
Hammered, high, and hung over - and still beats the Euro=peons! Yeah, that's gonna leave a mark . . .

Now that you mention it, Jim, yeah, I think it was due in part to his off-mountain escapades. Mostly drinking, though...I think. I'm fairly certain that the W.C. governing body (the name escapes me presently) conducts drug testing, so I doubt Mary Jane use, but who knows.
He's got that kick-ass, hell-bent-for-election attitude that Bill Johnson had in 1984. Love it!
