Billy Crystal on the Yankees Roster?

Apparently it is true, Billy will be a Yankee for a day.

TAMPA - Joe Torre may have gone to Hollywood, but comedian Billy Crystal, his longtime pal, apparently is staying true to his pinstripes.

Crystal will join the Yankees as a player - yes, a player - Wednesday, signing a one-day contract that includes an invitation to spring training. According to the Yankees' press release, the "contract" was approved by commissioner Bud Selig.

"I've been waiting 50 years for this call," Crystal said in a statement released by the team. "I'm overwhelmed by the generosity of the Yankees and commissioner Selig. I know this'll be tougher than the Broadway Softball League, but I'm looking forward to helping the younger players. ... which, by the way, is all of them. Oops, I have to go, Scott Boras is on the phone."

Crystal, a frequent guest of Torre's during his tenure as manager, will turn 60 on Friday. He will work out with the team tomorrow and play in the game against the Pirates at Legends Field on Thursday.

Having been a past winner of the "Bill Veeck Sports Marketing Award", I have a kind spot in my heart for all things "bush league" when it comes to marketing and baseball. However, with all these great ideas come questions.

Would it have been better to sign a veteran amputee for a day?
I bet Elliot Spitzer would like a job for a day.
