I agree with Peter F, sports is rarely done well when it comes to motion pictures. Here are my favorites in no particular order
My 10 Favorite sports movies
Hoosiers
Casey's Shadow
Breaking Away
Brian's Song
Chariots of Fire
Rocky
Bad News Bears
Pride of the Yankees
Raging Bull
Something for Joey
Honorable mentions- Searching for Bobby Fischer(Chess is a mental sport), Horse Feathers(Marx brothers do football), Eight Men Out, One on One and Mr. Baseball(Ok they aren't great sports movies but I had or have a crush on Anette O'Toole and the Japanese actress in Mr. Baseball I like too)
Most overrated sports movie to me- Bull Durham. I never got into that movie. Saw it in the movies 20 years ago and haven't watched it once since.
As to my favorites, a few comments.
Casey's Shadow- Walter Mathau is a quarterhorse trainer and father to three sons. A gentle movie on a sport I love.
Something for Joey- 2nd best made for TV sports movie only to Brian's Song. The touching story of Heisman trophy winner John Cappelletti and his leukemia stricken brother Joey.
The Pride of the Yankees- Who can forget the Gary Cooper classic. This is a real baseball picture.
Raging Bull- Robert DeNiro's Oscar turn as Jake LaMotta.
Breaking away- I can watch this movie over and over. As Paul Dooley(The father in the movie) may have said. "Repeat! Repeat....Repeat!)
Bad News Bears- Foul mouthed wise allecky kids shows and movies are a dime a dozen now. BNB is still the best of them all. We're talking The 1976 version not the recent remake.

Breaking Away is very god and very underrated. I really like "It Happens Every Summer" starring Ray Milland (I believe), who plays a scientist who discovers a formula that when applied to a baseball repels wood. A gem if not very well known.

For some unknown reason, I left out my favorite movie of all time that you had on your list: "Raging Bull". I guess I didn't think of it as a classic "sports" movie per se, but more of a character study.
I left "Rocky" out, too. Geez, glaring omission on my part. D'oh.
And I love that you added "Bad News Bears"! Classic! ("You can take that trophy and stick it where the sun doesn't shine, Yankees."
Oh well, shame on me for leaving these out, but I guess I was just going with the ones that came immediately to mind.
Anyway, nice list!
