What is Jerry Rice's Problem?

Jerry Rice has his underwear in a bunch over some stuff Randy Moss said in the wake of breaking the all-time TD reception record Rice used to hold. First, Moss's remark:

I don't think me breaking Jerry Rice's record is special. I think shutting you guys up is what made it special, all the negativity, all my critics.

And Jerry's reply to that remark:

It's almost like a little slap in the face, but that's typical of Randy Moss.

Sorry but I must've missed something - how was Randy slapping Jerry in the face? Sounded to me like Randy was trying to take a swipe at the press. The way he worded it, I guess you could say he was dissing Rice - but clearly, the media were the real target of whatever negativity he was trying to fire off. At worst Jerry got caught with some shrapnel. Frankly, I think Jerry's response says more about Jerry than Randy's "attack" says about Randy. I mean, we know Randy's a dickhead - but to find out how over-sensitive and obviously insecure Jerry Rice is, that's a bit eye-opening.

There is, actually, a legitimate reason for Rice to be a tad touchy, not so much at Randy personally, but at the circumstances of Randy's record-breaking performance. Because, in fact, Rice set the original TD record of 22 in a strike season, one where he himself only played in 12 games. Rice then has cause to think Moss's 16-game/23-TD season should have an asterisk on it, the same way Roger Maris's 61-homer season was asterisked because it was accomplished in 162 games while Babe Ruth's 60-homer performance was done over 154. And Rice could go further than that too, by pointing out the way the rules have changed over the years regarding defensive interference, and how much of an advantage receivers now have. DBs got away with a lot more contact in Rice's day than the pampered wide-outs see now.

So yeah, I can see where Rice might have something to bitch about. However, I don't think Moss's original remark was really a diss of him at all, and if Rice is feeling neglected or forgotten, he needs to aim his venom in the proper direction - at the league and the media, and whoever else might be deemed responsible for not paying proper homage to him and his dopey record.
