Virginia Collapses against Texas Tech 31-28

Virginia was leading 28 to 14 late in the fourth quarter. That's when the Cavalier nightmare started. The Red Raiders rolled up 17 unanswered points in the last 3:31 winning on a last second field goal. This will go down in NCAA history as a complete choke.

This is a game that Virginia coaches will wonder about all year. Cavalier running back Mikell Simpson rushed for 170 yards including a 96 yard blast in the first half. The Red Raiders even helped them out with eleven penalties for 101 yards.

Then with a commanding lead, Virginia went into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter Virginia rolled up a total of minus one yard! The Red Raiders on the other hand approached the fourth quarter differently posting 157 yards and three scores.

Was it destiny for Texas Tech? Was it being too conservative for Virginia?

Nah, it was a massive choke, plain and simple.

Actually, two plays pretty ... (Below threshold)

Actually, two plays pretty much accounted for the loss. On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Tech fumbled and lost the ball. The referees called the runner down by contact, although replays clearly showed the ball out long before his knees came down. Perhaps Virginia should have called TO and challenged the call, but all plays are supposedly reviewed this year, and that one wasn't close. Texas Tech went down the field and scored after that, closing to within seven points. Had they lost the ball as they should, Virginia might have locked it up with a score of their own.

Then, after the Virginia QB went down with an injury, the untested first year man replacing him panicked under pressure. Instead of throwing the ball away or taking a sack, he fumbled and gave Tech the ball near the Virginia goal line for the tying score.
