Twins Give Morneau One-Year Deal

The Twins avoided going to arbitration with first baseman Justin Morneau by signing him to a one-year, $7.4 million deal.

Morneau hit .271 this past year with 31 homers and 111 RBI. This after winning the AL MVP in 2006 with a .321 average, 34 homers and 130 RBI. Morneau made $4.5 million in 2007.

The 26-year-old Morneau will be eligible for free-agency after the 2010 season. Which means the Twins will trade him after the 2009 season, probably to the Yankees or Red Sox.

It doesn't really mean that at all. With Mark Teixeira becoming a free agent after this season (he just signed a 1-year deal today), it isn't a given that that Morneau will be traded to either the Yanks or Red Sox--either of whom could easily ink Big Tex to a deal by the end of 2008.

Given the recent history of the tough Johan Santana negotiations, I don't see a Morneau trade to either of those as being set in stone.
