The yearly dumb player Super Bowl victory prediction has been made. Predictably, it came from the Giants' Plaxico Burress, who said the Giants would beat the Patriots 23-17.
Tom Brady laughed it off when asked about it. "We're only going to score 17 points?" Brady joked. "OK. Is Plax playing defense?
"I wish he had said 45-42 and gave us a little credit for more points."
Giants' coach Tom Coughlin was not so amused, saying, "That's not what we aspire to do. We want to do our talking on the field. We've had a good theme all year long, which hasn't been that."
Plaxico pretended to be befuddled by all the attention his quote was getting. "Are predictions guarantees?" he said. "We want to win this game. It's interesting. You think of some things in life, as far as professional sports or playing in this game, and it's OK to want to win, think big and dream."
Plaxico is thinking big and dreaming - about being a lot more famous than he was before. There's always one of these guys every Super Bowl. The guy who sees all that extra media and thinks, "Here's my big chance."
It's all really silly and innocuous. Nobody on Plax's team is going to feel any extra pressure because of what he said - least of all Plax - and no one on the Patriots is going to be extra-motivated because of it. At most, Plax has given the Pats' cover guys a convenient theme to work into their trash-talking. "Nice prediction Plax," and stuff like that.
And the broadcast team will have something to mention during the interminable pre-game crap. Hey, if it reduces the Brady-sucking by a few minutes, I'm all for it.

Ah, sportwriters! Ya gotta love 'em.
Especially Dan Zinski: "The yearly dumb player Super Bowl victory prediction has been made. Predictably, it came from the Giants' Plaxico Burress, who said the Giants would beat the Patriots 23-17." And my nominee for dumb sportswriter before-the-Superbowl-has-been-played comment...
