Randy Moss is in trouble again - no surprise to people who followed his career in Minnesota, a checkered tenure that included the wideout running over a meter-maid and fake-mooning the fans at Lambeau.
The new trouble is potentially more serious than any of the stuff Randy got into in Minny however. This time there's a restraining order, filed against Moss in Broward County, Florida (why does everything always happen there?) by an unnamed woman who alleges the New England Patriot committed battery against her then refused to let her get medical attention.
Moss is denying all this, claiming the woman is trying to extort money from him. Moss told the press today:
It's something I've been battling for the last couple days, threats of going public if I didn't pay X amount of dollars. Before people rush quick to judgment, I think you need to find out the facts about really what is really going on. This young lady, by no means, is hurt. I didn't hurt her.All I know is that it's a friend of mine, a young lady, it was an accident where she hurt herself, to where they called me, called my attorneys, trying to get X amount of dollars out of me, and if "we don't get X amount of dollars" they were going to go to the press before this game.
We've seen plenty of cases where things like this did turn out to be extortion - but we've also seen cases where the charges turned out to be legit.
The question for Patriots fans of course is, Will the team be distracted by Randy's issues? I would tend to doubt it. Moss himself may be distracted, but I'm not sure that really matters either. The threat of Moss will cause the Chargers' defense to over-adjust and allow Tom Brady to pick it apart the same way he dissected the Jags. All Moss has to do is walk out onto the field, something he should be able to manage even if his mind isn't totally in the game (which it seldom is anyway).
Patriots haters looking for a Simpson jinxes Romo type edge can probably forget about it.
