Green Bay Throttles Seattle 42-20

Talk about one for the legend of Lambeau Field!

Texas A&M and Seattle were in a court fight earlier this year over the ownership of the term "12th man". The Aggies have used it for years but apparently the Seahawks claimed it as well. Does a "12th Man" even matter?

It did today because the Packers have a "12th Man" as well.

With less than three minutes off the clock in the first quarter, it was all Seattle and a possible route was on. Seattle had 44 total yards and 2 touchdowns. Green Bay had nine yards and two turnovers.

Then the Green Bay "12th Man" showed up. It showed up as it has predictably for years in the playoffs. Snow began to fall in the first quarter; much heavier than forecast. The horrid weather in Green Bay in January has served the Packers well. They have only lost one playoff game in Lambeau and oddly enough that was to the now hapless Atlanta Falcons.

But it was here and while it slowed the Seahawk offense, the Packers thrived. Over the next six possessions, the Packers rolled up 352 yards and six touchdowns in a row. During this time the Seahawks managed only two field goals.

Favre had a very efficient game completing almost 80% of his passes and three touchdowns. The key, however, was Packer running back Ryan Grant who ran for 201 yards in rapidly deteriorating conditions.

Grant contributed greatly to a stat I rarely site but this time it mattered. The packers held the ball 34 minutes to Seattle's 26. A lot can happen in eight minutes and it did.

The Packers more than doubled the total yardage 408-200. This was in spite of having more turnovers and fewer yards passing.

The key for the Packers is who they will play for the NFC Championship. It is likely they are praying for the Cowboys to lose as Favre is 0-9 in Dallas.

Stay tuned sports fans, this is getting interesting.

I remember the famous NFL Championship game in Green Bay between the Packers and Dallas - 1965 or 1966. It was the game Bart Starr won with a 4th and goal QB sneak for a TD with time running out.

In those days, Frank Gifford was new to broadcasting, and had the sideline reporter assignment - not a good job with temperatures well below zero. Returning from a commercial, they cut to Frank, who said he had been handed a hot cup of coffee just before the commercial break, and set it down. He picked it up and turned it upside down - frozen solid in a couple of minutes, if he was telling the truth.

Never bet against Green Bay at home in January. Normal people don't live in places like that.
