Tony Dungy hasn't officially retired yet, but when he does, Indy will promote assistant Jim Caldwell to the head coaching spot.
Colts owner Jim Irsay confirmed Caldwell's status as coach-in-waiting while at a party in New York on Thursday. The party was being thrown, by the way, because Caldwell is set to exhibit his original manuscript of Kerouac's On the Road at the New York Public Library. I don't know the significance of this - I just thought I'd mention it.
Tony Dungy, it's believed, will announce on Monday whether he is still coach of the Colts. Irsay said that no matter what decision Dungy makes, he's sure Dungy's commitment will be "100%."
Jim Caldwell has NFL head coaching experience - he was Indy's coach for one game in 2005 when Dungy took a leave of absence over his son's suicide. He was also the head man at Wake Forest for 8 years.
Presumably, since Caldwell is black, the Colts will get no flack over not interviewing anyone else for the job. Unless Filipinos raise a stink.
