On Saturday morning the BCS rankings were fairly clear:
Missouri
West Virginia
Ohio State
Georgia
Kansas
Virginia Tech
LSU
USC
Oklahoma
Florida
If the Tigers and the Mountaineers win, all would be settled and the Bowl bids could be sorted out on Sunday. There would be no real controversy.
But that's not what happened. The perfect storm occurred. This is the train wreck scenario that the flawed BCS system has been vulnerable to since its inception.
Missouri lost to Oklahoma and West Virginia was stunned by Pitt so now we have to sort out the survivors and determine who plays for the National Championship.
First understand that the system we have is what it is. We may not like it but it's the reality we live in. Maybe this chaos will eventually reform it or even explode it but that will not happen this year. I hated trigonometry but soon discovered that avoiding the class would not improve my grade. So, let's postpone crying about the system and try to sort this out.
First take the bottom three out of the mix. Nobody is jumping to #2 from #8, 9 or 10 when #3, 4 and 5 didn't even play. Ohio State, Georgia and Kansas didn't hurt themselves, so that leaves Virginia Tech and LSU.
This is actually fairly simple. In order for Virginia Tech or LSU to jump, they would have to convincingly dominate a good team. Frankly that did not happen. Both of them played ranked teams but both of them won in spite of themselves. The Hokies were out-played everywhere but the scoreboard and the Tigers' best player was Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge.
So, without a performance worthy of a bump, what are we left with? Ohio State and Georgia move up. This would make Georgia the first team in history to play for a National Championship with two losses. In spite of the controversy this will cause, the Bulldogs will be favored by 8 in that game.
If anything else comes out of this the BCS has admitted that is a phony system.

Georgia didn't win its conference or its own Division. And once again, the Big Ten benefits from no conference championship game. KU is in the same boat with Georgia.
Until there is a playoff system established, a two loss team that didn't win it's conference should be ignored.
OSU/LSU
