Todd Collins Lives

The Redskins beat the Bears 24-16 last night, which isn't news, cause we all know the Bears stink. What is news, however, is who led the Redskins to that particular victory. No, not Jason Campbell - he suffered a dislocated kneecap in the second quarter and had to exit the game. So who does that leave? Patrick Ramsey? Nope - he's gone. Mark Brunell? He got demoted to third-string back in September. Uh...Tim Hasselbeck then? Danny Wuerffel? Shane Matthews?

Would you believe Todd Collins?

Yes, Todd Collins is actually the Redskins' second-string quarterback. Todd Collins came into the game last night after Campbell's painful-sounding injury and, apparently possessed by the spirit of Mark Rypien, threw for 224 yards and 2 TDs against the Midgets of the Midway. It was a huge, career-resurrecting performance for Collins, and a season-saver for the Skins, who got their record to 6-7, keeping them barely in the playoff hunt.

How impressive was Collins's out-of-nowhere quarterbacking feat? Joe Gibbs, who's been around a long, long time, said he didn't think he'd ever had a better performance coming off the bench. Of course, Joe couldn't recall the rules in the Bills game, so who knows how many of his past games he actually remembers.

It's all positivity right now for the Redskins, after a horrid stretch that featured four straight losses, the death of Sean Taylor and Gibbs's gaffe. On the flip-side you have the Bears, who have basically thrown in the towel. Chicago's own Alex Brown summed up the Bears' attitude when he said after the game, "It's pretty much over now."

The Bears actually did make a run last night after their own QB, Rex Grossman, went out with an injury and was replaced by Brian Griese. But, in the end it came to naught, and now they're at 5-8. The curse of the Super Bowl losers strikes again, apparently.
