The "Doug Williams" Award Goes To....

Remember when Redskins quarterback Doug Williams played the best game of his life in one quarter against the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl? Actually, if you take away that record breaking second quarter, Denver wins that game. Of course you can't do that and we have to live with the fact that occasionally a short but blinding flash of brilliance is enough to win a big game.

This year's "Doug Williams Award" goes to Alabama's John Parker Wilson leading the Crimson Tide over Colorado 30-24 in the Independence Bowl. Parker's dominance in the first quarter (plus two minutes of the second) surged Alabama to a 27-0 lead which they managed to hold on to and finally win 30-24.

In that first quarter (+), Wilson hit on 10 of 14 for 152 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for a 24 yard gain. The rest of the game was not quite as dazzling where he connected on nine of 18 for 104 yards and an interception. He also gained zero yards on three carries.

"We got off to a great start, which means we were well-prepared," said Alabama coach Nick Saban. "We made some mistakes in the game and let them come back. We took the challenge and actually competed and showed some great competitive character."

Saban has righted the ship at Alabama (sort of) but the late season meltdown of four straight losses that included Miss. State and Louisiana-Monroe made this game extremely important for the Alabama faithful. Maybe the stars are beginning to align for the Tide as they easily could have finished this season on a five game drought.
