Skins In, Vikes Out

If any team had reason to pack it in this year, it was the Redskins. They had one of their players die for God's sake - and then they had their old coach throw a game away trying to be cute with time-outs. After that, though, the Skins found their mojo, and one of the main factors in this turn-around was, improbably, a journeyman quarterback who hadn't started a game since the Clinton administration. Today the Skins beat the Cowboys (with Tony Romo playing a lot of the game by the way) and, at 9-7, snapped up the 6th and final NFC playoff berth.

On the other side you have the Vikings, who looked even more done than the Redskins at 3-6, then managed to rip off 5 straight before reverting to form and losing the final two. Maybe the most amazing thing about the Vikings' run was that they did most of it after rookie superstar Adrian Peterson's great mid-season explosion had already petered out. Today they managed to fight back from a 19-3 fourth quarter deficit caused mostly by turnovers to tie it 19-19, then coughed it up one last time in the extra period and lost 22-19. At the very least, the 5-2 finish got the heat off Brad Childress, whose head was being called for by every Viking fan on earth after their 34-0 loss to the Packers. Now Viking fans can gear up for an off-season of screaming for Donovan McNabb and Larry Fitzgerald, or maybe Chad Pennington and Chad Johnson.
