Mike Singletary was beaten out by Bobby Petrino for the Atlanta Falcons' head coaching job last year, but of course Petrino is gone now, and Singletary, currently on the staff in San Francisco, may be in the running for that position again. Singletary, for his part, has said he is still interested in having the Falcons' head job.
"I want to be a part of building something special," Singletary told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday. "In all honesty, I think Arthur Blank is the kind of NFL owner you can do that with."
Singletary, who has never been a head coach or a top coordinator, would seem an unlikely choice for a Falcons franchise trying to regain its credibility after a string of embarrassments. Blank's first choice would surely be a name coach like Marty Schottenheimer, someone who will command immediate respect in the locker room. Some might argue that a former great player like Singletary would also command that respect, but I'm not so sure. Art Shell was once a great player too and he only lasted one year in Oakland (the second time), and was walked all over by guys like Randy Moss. But, if Singletary wants that job, I say more power to him. Maybe he's the guy who can make a flower grow out of that particular heap of you know what.
