Petrino Leaves Falcons, Takes Arkansas Job

Bobby Petrino came to the Atlanta Falcons believing the high-flying style of offense he employed at Louisville would translate well to the NFL game, especially with a guy like Michael Vick running things. Unfortunately, Michael was more into fighting his dogs, and sometimes electrocuting or strangling them, than playing football, and ended up being thrown in jail for it. The loss of Vick reduced the Falcons to a shell of a football team, frustrating Petrino's plans. Now, Petrino has decided he's done with the frustration - he's told the Atlanta Falcons that he will resign as head coach, and accept the top job with the Arkansas Razorbacks' football program.

The 3-10 Falcons will need a major makeover if they hope to be competitive again, one that will have to begin by finding a quarterback to replace Vick (and Chris Redman ain't the guy). But none of that is Bobby Petrino's problem now, because he'll be in Arkansas ordering around college kids.

Petrino, like Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban before him, discovered the hard way that coaching highly-paid pro players is different than coaching 20-year-old guys on scholarships. Pros talk back, and criticize you in the media like D'Angelo Hall did after the Falcons cut Grady Jackson, and blow up on the sidelines like Hall did in the Carolina game. He also discovered, like a lot of people, that genius offensive game-plans don't work without players who can execute them. Petrino had a great thing going in Louisville, with Brian Brohm chucking the ball all over the place, but Joey Harrington isn't the NFL equivalent of Brohm, plus NFL defenses tend to be tougher than Conference USA ones.

Again, none of this is Petrino's problem anymore. He's going to Arkansas to succeed Houston Nutt, who got run out of town even after beating LSU. Petrino will try to install his offense in Arkansas and may be successful with it. Or, he may end up struggling to re-establish his reputation as a college guru like Spurrier and Saban. At any rate, he won't have to get barked at by D'Angelo Hall anymore, and he won't have to answer anymore questions about Vick. And best of all, he won't have to watch Joey Harrington get turned into roadkill.
