Martz Out

Mike Martz will reportedly not be back as offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions next year. Martz, the pompous genius behind the Rams' great offenses of a few years ago, was supposed to make Detroit's collection of talented receivers plus feisty QB Jon Kitna into a high-flying circus act, but after some early-season success things came crashing Wallenda-like to earth.

Main problem for Martz: the Lions have no one remotely comparable to Marshall Faulk, the man who made those Rams teams go. And though Kitna may be a reasonable facsimile of Kurt Warner, without a running game he was never going to be able to put up the MVP numbers Warner accumulated. Also, Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson are not Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt. Williams and Johnson are good, but not that good. Even had Martz succeeded, Detroit would've never been anything more than a poor man's Rams.
