You forget that June Jones ... (Below threshold)1. Posted by Tony | December 3, 2007 4:36 AM | Score: 0 (2 votes cast)
You forget that June Jones admits that the Run and Shoot is a system, just like the Spread is a system. He was just saying that right now, Tim Tebow would not be able to operate the Run and Shoot and Colt Brennan would be able to run the Spread. I would agree that right now, that statement would be true. If you remember a certain Virginia Tech QB by the name of Michael Vick, he was toted as the greatest running quarterback with the greatest arm in college football and look as his results in the NFL. Mediocre at best with moments of greatness. So we'lll have to see as Mark May says "in 4 years" when Colt Brennan and Tim Tebow play each other.

I don't disagree with your point and Vick is a good example but systems can inflate QB numbers particularly at the college level. There is a reason that the NFL is not dominated by Hawaii, Texas Tech and Louisville QB's. That being said, I had a commenter last night say that we are comparing Marino and Elway. Certainly an interesting thought.

"System" is code for "Gimmick" and June Jones offense gets called that all the time. Funny its the system that New England is using. So Jones is merely being educational when he calls Tebow a "system quarterback".
Tebow's performance was very much like Brennan's last year when the latter threw 58 TD passes. Tebow is a good QB, but he is in the system that Urban Meyers brought in Utah.

I will start by saying that Colt is a great player with a lot of ability. But you have to admit that every team college or pro run some sort of system be it Spread, Run and Shoot, West Coast offense, Single wing, wishbone what ever. What no one here is looking at is that Tebow did this in the SEC not the WAC. Imagine if Florida and Hawaii were to switch conferences for a year do you really think Hawaii would be 12-0 or putting up anywhere near the numbers they have put up in the past few years? Where if you put Florida in Hawaii's schedule I would guarantee Florida puts up at least the numbers they did this year, most likely embarrassingly larger numbers. My point is if you put Colt in the SEC or a real conference where Boise St is not you toughest opponent, he would still do well but not 58 touchdowns well. Maybe he is an above average QB who throws for 15-20 TD's if he could stay healthy.

What proof do we have that Colt Brennan could effectively run the spread. Chris Leak was a drop back style passer and he couldn't run the Spread, they had to alter it to be compatible with his drop back style. I hardly think that someone who has rushed for 0.9 yards per carry on 70+ attempts is qualified to run the spread

Steve, That is an excellent point. I think Colt is in fact a "system" quarterback. I also think he would be at best average in the SEC.

All of these comparisons and comments about Brennan and Tebow are interesting. They are both great quarterbacks and watching both of them perform is a treat. I think that right now Brennan is more likely to succeed at the quarterback position in the NFL. Who knows what will happen as Tebow develops further. For all of those who think Brennan can't compete against better competition, look at his history against good teams over the past 3 years. Also, if Brennan were to be on a team in the SEC, wouldn't the argument be that he would do better because he would have a better supporting cast? You can't have it both ways. I think it is amazing that Hawaii does as well as it does with the amount of travel and its poor facilities and terrible budget.
I am looking forward to seeing Tebow and Brennan at the next level, I think that fans will love them both.

Well, that's just great! We'll now see how much Hawaii misses this great coach, now. The way the Spanos go through coaches, maybe Jones will have the opportunity to build out the San Diego Chargers again; that's if they don't go to the super Bowl this year; if he doesn't end up in the Texas part of wherever SMU is; all I know it's as humid as Hawaii and about 10X uglier in Texas. Too bad the athletic department didn't support June Jones.

Common you guys! June Jones is a master at PR, and the comment about Tebow was his way of supporting his QB in the eyes of the public. I doubt whether anyone except those who know June Jones personally knows what he really thinks of Tebow.
