Florida State football is in the midst of a massive academic fraud scandal, which has already prompted them to suspend 25 players for the up-coming Music City Bowl. Now the NCAA is expected to take a look at the situation, and if Florida State is found guilty of using ineligible players during the 2007 season, they could be forced to forfeit some or all of their seven victories.
Coach Bobby Bowden, for his part, says he's not concerned about the situation. Bobby told reporters yesterday:
I don't worry about it. I don't think it's possible . . . we didn't intentionally play an ineligible player. We didn't know anybody was ineligible.
By "we" of course Bobby means "I." As in, "I Bobby Bowden do not bother to know what's going on with my program, therefore I am blameless in anything improper that might have gone down." That's how it works when you're the figurehead - your image has to remain untarnished, therefore you are insulated from all the unpleasantness and other stuff going on beneath you. Bowden's job at this point amounts to showing up on Saturdays to stand on the sideline and act like he's coaching, then do press conferences where he throws off his homespun sayings and makes everyone laugh. He and Joe Paterno are basically living statues. So yeah, naturally Bobby didn't know anything was going on. Why the hell should he?
