Cardinals Don't Get it Done

Every year I hear about how the Arizona Cardinals are going to be the sleeper team in the NFC. Look out for the Cards, the prognosticators say - they've got the players to turn around years of futility and make a big playoff run.

So when the hell is it going to happen? Not this year. Again the Cardinals looked pretty good at times during the season, but again they've gone in the tank late. Their fate was just about sealed today in New Orleans when they lost 31-24 to the Saints, dropping to 6-8.

Again the offense was good for Arizona, but the defense was not. Kurt Warner threw for 233 yards and 3 TDs - but Drew Brees had 315 yards and 2 TDs, and Reggie Bush's replacement Aaron Stecker ran for 95 and another 2 TDs (after running for 100 yards last week against the Falcons).

About Stecker...you can call me crazy if you want, but I think he's a better every-down back than Reggie Bush. No, he's not as potentially explosive as Bush - but he's solid, and I think the Saints are going to look back on their season and wish they'd given him the ball more even before Reggie went out with his injury.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, have got to address their defense. Yes they have some nice receivers and yes Kurt Warner can still play winning ball, but at some point you've got to be able to stop somebody. It puts too much pressure on your offense when you give up almost 25 points/game as the Cardinals have done this year.

Oh, by the way...the Saints are still hanging in the playoff race. They're 7-7 now, and eagerly await the results of tomorrow's Minnesota/Chicago match-up. A Viking loss would pull the Saints into a tie for the second wild-card spot at least record-wise (someone else will have to work out the tiebreaker scenarios cause I have no clue).

I usually give up on the Ca... (Below threshold)
Imhotep:

I usually give up on the Cards season in Mid October....it's great to have had optimism in the beginning of December.

8-8 would be a good year for the Cards and their new coach.
