BCS Armageddon

bcsarmageddon.jpg

Part 1: The Pitt Panthers have beaten the #2 West Virginia Mountaineers, ending West Virginia's run at the National Championship game. Things went down the toilet for West Virginia in the second quarter when star quarterback Pat White dislocated his thumb on a fluke play. Back-up Jarrett Brown was able to finish the drive by running for a TD, but was ineffective the rest of the game. White returned in the 4th for a comeback try but was unable to get anything going.

Part 2: Oklahoma beats Missouri to claim the Big 12 Championship and knock the Tigers out of not only the national title picture, but likely the BCS entirely (since each conference is only allowed 2 BCS teams, and Kansas has one less loss and will probably get that second slot behind the Sooners). Heisman hopeful Chase Daniel had a sub-par game for Mizzou, throwing for 219 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT, while running for 26 yards and 1 score.

Next up on the agenda - sorting out the BCS mess. Should be interesting at least.

Phil McCrackin:

So how many more years of this insanity before we get a college football playoff system? The BCS is flawed at best.

BCS rankings added a level ... (Below threshold)

BCS rankings added a level of statistics to the old system, which relied purely on the opinions of sportswriters and coaches in the national polls. That was an improvement, to be sure, but one still failing to meet the goal of avoiding the controversies inevitable when contending teams have not met on the field.

A play-off system is the only way to determine a national championship. It works pretty well for NCAA basketball and baseball (as well as any number of other sports), and the lower divisions in football. The only real reason it hasn't been adopted is the bowl system - but the accommodations made to and by the bowls by the BCS show it can be done for playoffs as well.

and Hawaii pulls out a heart stopper, scoring the go ahead td with less than a minute to play, Washinton, on a decent kick-off return and two long pass plays were 1st and 10 on hawaii's 4yrd line with less than 20sec to play. after a stop, the washington receiver bobbled a sure td pass in the end zone, hawaii intercepted the bobble preserving a undefeated 12-0 season, the only undefeated major college team. colt brennan was 40something for 50, 400yrds+ and 5 td's, coming back from being 21 points down in the 1st qtr. they have to be factored into the bcs equation, add in the upsets earlier on saturday and sunday's final bcs ranking should be interesting

MunDane:

This is really getting stupid. How many times are we, the psorts fans, going to just sit around and go, "Duh, ok!" as the BCS system is allowed to exist.

We had what 8 teams ranked #1 this season and 10 that were ranked #2? Seriously, whomever plays in the BCS title game doesn't deserve to play there just because they outlasted the rest of the field. Div I needs a playoff.

Setting the parameters/crit... (Below threshold)

Setting the parameters/criteria for who should be in the national championship game is (unfortunately) not going to be done by any of us.That said, I will plow into my own "frames" of who deserves to be in the NC game:

If we (you and me) go under the premise of "the two best teams" in the country RIGHT NOW, then I think OU should play USC. This is based on throwing out all parameters of BCS rankings and complete season records-----meaning losing to Stanford or Colorado has no bearing (other than a loss in the books)
While OU two loses were mental meltdowns, after what I saw last night, I think Stoops case that he made after the game had credibility------if a two loss team will be in the NC game, "why not the "two-loss" team that just pulverized the # 1 team in the country?

Side-note: Missouri got out-coached and were dominated by both the offensive and defensive lines of OU last night-------if any team can boast that they can defeat any spread offense in the country right now, Stoops and the crew can.

Stewart Mandell (an obvious SEC promoter) at SI is still lobbying for LSU to be in the NC game this morning.

OBSERVATION: LSU DID NOT WIN YESTERDAY, TENNESSEE LOST----by that I mean an inexperience QB (Erik Ainge) lost his patience and threw into coverage that he had no business doing. Tennessee had more control of that game offensively (before the two INT's) than LSU did. Credit to LSU's defense? Maybe. But I think Ainge panicked during crunch time when he didn't have to.

Which brings us back to the "reality" that OSU will be picked as one of the teams in the NC game based on the BCS bullshit formula. Six or seven other teams have legitimate reasons to be the "OTHER" team. No one is going to be happy with the outcome because (I dare say) parity at a level rarely seen in college football this season has made any system in determining the two best teams (other than at least a top four playoff) seriously flawed.

Before the BCS, wouldn't Hawaii (who came from 21 points down to beat Wash) have a legitimate case as the only undefeated team in the nation? Would they be embarrassed if they were trounced by any of the top ten teams in the nation? Probably. But what if on a given day in January they could beat one of these teams?

One thing we will have to admit, that this is a season of college football that no one could have predicted from the start or in fact at the finish. And the last "position" I would want to be a part of this Sunday afternoon would be any member of the BCS.
