LSU has given the green light for Michigan to court Tiger coach Les Miles.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Michigan officials asked for and received permission from LSU to meet with Les Miles about the Wolverines' head football coaching vacancy.
LSU athletic director Skip Bertman granted the request on condition that Michigan representatives wait until after Saturday's Southeastern Conference championship game in Atlanta before starting negotiations, LSU spokesman Herb Vincent said.
Vincent said Bertman and LSU chancellor Sean O'Keefe also plan to meet with Miles next week to discuss his contract.
"We're trying to get the SEC championship game behind us that's why we're scheduling these things for next week," Vincent said.
LSU was not prepared to make a statement about the extent to which the school was prepared to compete with Michigan's offer, should one be made, Vincent said.
This whole issue is naturally a huge distraction down in Tiger Nation. Whether or not it will impact the team's performance in the SEC Championship game against Tennessee remains to be seen but distraction is never a good thing while preparing for a game of this magnitude.
Look folks, there is no mystery here. Miles is gone. He went to college at Michigan, played football there, and met his wife there...starting to get the picture?
The question is who will LSU get to replace him? Don't let current jobs or contract positions impact the speculation too much. If Miles leaves he will also forfeit a $1.5 million barrel of cash that could be used to lure just about anybody to the bayou.
LSU is probably one of the top-5 coaching jobs around. They have no real in-state recruiting competition and Louisiana is very deep in talent but take a look at the Tiger's roster and notice how well they do in Texas.
This is an Urban Meyer-esque instant winner.
