Cleveland Indians' skipper Eric Wedge handily and deservedly won this year's AL Manager of the Year award. He finished ahead of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (abbreviated "LAAA" for octave-scale, boxscore-reading lovers everywhere) skipper, Mike Scioscia and former Yankees' helmsman, Joe Torre.
Meanwhile, Arizona Diamondbacks Bob Melvin--I repeat, Bob Melvin--won NL Manager of the Year. Colorado's Clint Hurdle finished a mind-boggling 3rd--behind the Phillies' Charlie Manual.
OK. Just WTF is going on with this vote? Melvin did a fine a job (unlike what he did here in Seattle), but Jiminey Christmas, how the hell does Hurdle not win this award!
The argument that the Baseball Writers' Association of America votes at the end of the season doesn't fly. The Rockies had already made an improbable run just to get to a 1-game playoff vs. the San Diego Padres--a game that occurred exactly ONE day after the end of the season. Unless the writers submitted their ballots in mid-September or MLB is dispensing meth in their ballots to get them in sooner, this is a gross miscarriage in voting.
Whatever the case, Hurdle got screwed.
(Side note: I'm an advocate that this vote should be based on the criteria of the manager who does "more with less". What that manager achieves is far more impressive than what the manager who seemingly has everything achieves--i.e., the seemingly endless payrolls of Torre, Boston's Terry Francona, etc.)

More with less is absolutely correct.
Hell, it should be a tie between Melvin and Hurtle....neither one can believe their team was anywhere close to the playoffs, just look at some of the post game interviews.
Joe Torre doesn't ever get the look of bewilderment that Melvin and Hurtle had.
Oh well.
