Torii Spurns White Sox, Chooses Angels

Torii Hunter is a free agent no more. The former Minnesota Twins CF has decided to pack up all his Gold Gloves and head to the warmer, more glamorous climes of Southern California, agreeing to a 5-year/$90 million deal with the L.A. Angels.

Hunter gives the Angels four all-star caliber outfielders, along with Vladimir Guerrero, Gary Matthews, Jr. and Garrett Anderson. Manager Mike Scioscia says he intends using all four guys one way or another:

Torii is going to be in centerfield virtually every day. Gary will be in the outfield almost every day, so the other two guys will split up the DH. We want all four of those bats in the lineup.

Hunter and Matthews playing side-by-side in the outfield could be fun to watch. But there's a strong chance it will never happen, given the Angels' interest in the Orioles' Miguel Tejada, and the fact that Matthews would likely be included in any trade for the shortstop. And then there are all those Miguel Cabrera rumors. Does the Hunter signing mean the Angels are out of that market? Let's put it this way - if the Angels manage to swing all the deals that are rumored, they will have a scary team. Especially if Tejada returns to his form of a few years ago.

The Angels' signing of Hunter has implications for other teams, like the White Sox, who were reportedly very interested in him. Ken Williams is looking to revamp the team after a dismal 2007, but now he'll have to look elsewhere for a centerfielder. Andruw Jones is still out there, and so is former White Sox human wrecking ball Aaron Rowand. Rowand will probably wind up with the Dodgers, so that leaves Jones, a guy lots of teams will shy away from after his weak 2007. I personally think Jones is worth paying big money for at least three years though. Get him away from Turner Field, not necessarily a big hitter's park, and watch those home run numbers climb back up close to 40. I'd rather have him than either Rowand or Hunter, but that's just me.

Agreed.

Also, I'm ecstatic you and Peter F. are posting so much here. You guys are doing a great job, and I'm definitely going to be hanging out here a lot.

I'd think I'd rather have Rowand or Hunter vs. Jones. Both have more speed, hit for slightly better average and have been the souls of their teams. Hunter and Jones have similar gloves, and Rowand patrols the OF with heart (remember how he broke his nose against the fence last year?). Jones is streaky with his bat. And I lean
toward disagreeing that Turner Field was holding him back as evidence of his 2006 year and Turner didn't seem to bother Mark Teixeira in the second half of 2007 (.283/9HR/24RBI) at Turner.

In my book, it's the intangibles and little things that make a guy worth signing.

BTW: Who'll play CF for the Halos? Matthews or Hunter?

Since Jones is kinda lacking in the 'heart' department, I bet he signs with the Dodgers. lol

News that makes me cringe: Giants are rumored to be after Miguel Cabrera. Yuuuuuuuuck. Great hitter, but he'll fatter than Prince Fielder by the end of 2008.
