Priest Holmes's attempt at a comeback was a valiant one, but the Chiefs running back has now decided to call it quits for good after experiencing a recurrence of symptoms related to the neck problems that kept him out for 18 months.
Priest became concerned after taking three good licks in Sunday's game against Indianapolis and feeling a tell-tale tingling in his extremities. He spoke to Chiefs owner Carl Peterson about the situation on Tuesday, and Peterson told him to go home and sleep on it. Now sources close to Holmes say he will officially announce his retirement today.
I don't know where this leaves the Chiefs. They're already without Larry Johnson for the season. They dealt their supposed back-up running back Michael Bennett to Tampa. Today they promoted Gilbert Harris from the practice squad to team with Kolby Smith in the backfield. It's not like they have a dynamic passing game that they can lean on. It doesn't look good for them.
It makes you wonder: Did the Chiefs put a little too much faith in Priest? Obviously they didn't anticipate losing Johnson, who's been durable. But trading away Bennett, who is at least serviceable, and leaving yourself with only a fragile Priest Holmes as a legitimate back-up - seems like a bad decision now. But who knows, maybe Smith and Harris can get the job done. If not, it's pretty much a lost season for Kansas City.
