Mets in on Santana

The Yankees and Red Sox aren't the only high-profile East Coast teams in on Johan Santana. Reportedly, the Mets are also sniffing around the Twins' super-stud pitcher, who will be traded to some big-spending franchise before this off-season is over.

The Twins, as I've previously reported, are looking for a good young outfielder as well as pitching prospects in return for Santana. The Mets have a guy named Carlos Gomez, who mostly played left last year, but has patrolled centerfield some, and may interest the Twins as a replacement for departed All-Star Torii Hunter. Gomez hit only .232 last season and was injured a lot, but he was listed as the Mets' #2 outfield prospect by Baseball America.

On the Yankees front...a Newark Star-Ledger report says the Yankees have declared Joba Chamberlain and Robinson Cano off-limits in any trade discussions with the Twins. Melky Cabrera is still on the table however, and now reports are saying the Yanks would turn to signing noted face-plant specialist Aaron Rowand as a replacement centerfielder in the event Cabrera is dealt.

The Rowand signing would be a great move for the Yanks, who I think need to shed some of their business-like demeanor and acquire a bit of grit and attitude. Rowand is the closest thing we have now to Len Dykstra, and would be a huge hit with Yankee fans.
