Stephon Marbury decided to take a little unapproved vacation from the Knicks, and got fined $195,000. That learned him. He showed up for last night's game in L.A. against the Clippers, and came off the bench to score 13 points in helping the Knicks just barely lose, 84-81.
Knicks coach Isiah Thomas had the option of suspending Marbury in addition to the fine, but chose not to. Isiah said:
I've played with people I don't like and I've won with people I don't like. We're a professional basketball team and my job is trying to win a game.Whatever happened in the past is in the past. We move forward.
It's too bad, Isiah, that what happened in the past isn't in the past. Not as long as Marbury has all that "stuff" on you that he claimed to when he confronted you on the team plane after finding out he wasn't going to start in Phoenix. That stuff apparently related to the sexual harassment allegations brought against you this summer by Anucha Browne Sanders, or maybe some completely different stuff that no one even knows about.
Let's face it - the Knicks are a way better soap opera than they are a basketball team right now. That was all fine and good as long as the Celtics also stunk - cause then all the East Coast media derision was at least divided - but now the Celtics are great and the Knicks, they still stink. And the hilarious part of it is that the Knicks can't even trade Marbury. No one will take his contract. And it's not like it would make any difference for them to can Isiah Thomas. Whoever they brought in there as coach would be strapped with the same bunch of sorry no-accounts. Pat Riley at the height of his powers couldn't have made a viable team out of that group of surly malcontents, no matter how many buckets of cold water he dunked his head into.
The Knicks are, right now, the most pitiful professional sports franchise in North America. Except for all the franchises in the NHL and perhaps the Miami Dolphins.

Not so fast, my friend. My Bengals happen to be the most pitiful professional sports franchise in North America. Nobody's taking that title away from them until Mike Brown either sells the team or passes on to the next life.
