Everyone laughed at the start of the season when Jon Kitna bragged that his Lions were going to go 10-6. Then when the Lions came out like some kind of juggernaut everyone started apologizing to Kitna. Now it appears the apologies may have been premature. The new Lions are looking a lot like the old Lions, and after today's 16-10 home loss to the Giants, have dropped 2 straight to fall to 6-4.
Jon Kitna was a big part of the Lions' resurgence, but today he was a big part of their failure. Yes, Kitna threw for 377 yards against the Giants' D - but also got picked off 3 times. A lot of this had to do with the Lions being totally without a running game. They ran the ball only 11 times all day, all 11 hand-offs going to Kevin Jones who is not 100% healthy right now.
The Giants offense, meanwhile, was just good enough to get it done. Eli Manning had a better day than his brother Peyton, throwing for 283 and 1 TD. The Giants are now the resurgent team, after their early-season struggles, while the Lions are clearly headed in the wrong direction. Mike Martz may have developed a reputation as an offensive genius in St. Louis, but there was one thing he had there that he doesn't have in Detroit - Marshall Faulk. If Detroit doesn't find someone to carry the rock for them soon, they will find themselves out of the playoffs in spite of that great start.
