NBA guru Pete Vecsey thinks Isiah Thomas's head is about to roll for his part in turning the New York Knicks into a laughing-stock. Vecsey wrote this morning:
Even with James Dolan still in charge, I was fairly convinced Thomas' termination was going to happen Wednesday night following the Knicks' loss to the Clippers in LA -- their fifth in seven games -- or yesterday.I continue to believe it could occur before tonight's game with the Kings in Sacramento (a halfway suitable replacement must be unearthed), and I'm not the only one.
The same source who tipped me off the Knicks had decided to buy out Larry Brown called to say Thomas had informed him Dolan was coming out west (a team official branded it inaccurate) to see him and sensed he was in severe job jeopardy.
Then again, that just might be wishful thinking. A couple Knick players and at least one staff member get the distinct impression Thomas wants to be fired and is going to extremes (I offer for evidence the bizarrely stained, even for Isiah, Stephon Marbury misadventure) to give Dolan no other choice.
I want to feel bad for the Knicks but I can't. Any team that would hand over even a modicum of responsibility to an incompetent like Isiah deserves what it gets.
Here's what the Knicks need to do - get rid of the whole bunch, then ring up a couple of Isiah's old Pistons teammates and offer them jobs. I'm thinking of Joe Dumars and Bill Laimbeer. Pry Dumars away from Detroit and make him team president, then make Laimbeer coach (his championship came in the WNBA I realize, but that still gives him a more impressive resume than Isiah ever had). Then maybe they could hire Dennis Rodman and make him official team drag-queen. They like that kind of stuff in New York right? I mean they once had a cross-dressing mayor, so why not let Dennis put on a dress and prance up and down during games? At least it would offer a distraction - something the Knicks will sorely need while Joe and Bill are still sorting out the mess their old buddy Isiah left them.
