Liveblogging the 1st Round of the NFL Draft (part 2)

The big winners in the 1st round: Cleveland with a franchise QB and LT in the 1st round, and Oakland with the QB of the future.

There were no big losers, but some questionable calls on move ups by Denver, Dallas, and a big reach on a WR by San Diego.

Enjoy the rest of the Draft. I'm going to Wendy's to get one of those Steak middle melt thingies.

6:20pm And with the last pick in the 1st round, Indianapolis selects Anthony Gonzalez. Some people thought he was a better (if slower) receiver than Ted Ginn, Jr. at Ohio State.

6:11pm It's now official. The Bears select Greg Olson, TE from Miami. Indy is on the clock.

6:07pm Indianapolis has got to go secondary. There's at least one good CB left on the board.

5:55pm San Diego selects Craig Davis, WR from LSU. That's the 4th LSU player to go in the 1st round. This is a stretch. Phil Rivers may need some people to throw to, but....I hope he has a great personality. Chicago is on the clock, but the NFL Network showed footage of a Greg Olson from Miami with a Bears' hat on.

5:46pm Baltimore selects Ben Grubbs, G from Auburn. Good pick. San Diego is on the clock.

5:37pm SF gave up their 1st rounder next year and a 4th rounder this year. !@#$%%&* Patriots.

5:35pm The 49ers select Joe Staley, OL from Central Michigan. Big boy. 6-6 and 300 pounds. He was projected as high 2nd round. I guess the 49ers didn't think he would last that long. Baltimore is on the clock.

5:33pm The 49ers have traded for this pick from New England. There are many ways they can go with the pick.

5:19pm New Orleans selects Robert Meachem, WR from Tennessee. Not good or bad. Just a pick. Another target for Brees. The @#!$$%& Patriots are on the clock.

5:07pm The Cowboys select Anthony Spencer, DE from Purdue. He's a tweener. He should fit the 3-4 scheme. But, did Dallas need to come back to the 1st round to get him? New Orleans is on the clock.

5:04pm The Raiders are happy with Jamarcus Russell. And if you read the comments, the Raider Nation is celebrating tonight.

5:02pm Cats and Dogs Living Together Update: Philly and Dallas have made a trade for Dallas to move back up to the 1st round. A trade within the division. That's odd.

4:56pm The Denver Post says it wasn't a surprise that Denver picked Jarvis Moss, but it was a surprise that they moved up to do it. The consensus is that he would have been there at 21.

4:54pm Carolina selects Jon Beson, LB from Miami. They got who they wanted, and they got extra picks in the process. Good move. That makes 2 from the U (fear the U) in a row. At last, the alignment of the stars is returning to normal. The Eagles are on the clock.

4:47pm New England selects Brandon Meriweather, S from Miami. Deion Sanders just compared him to a Sean Taylor/Ed Reed combination. That's a pretty good endorsement. $@#!%%& Patriots. And they pick again in 4 picks. Carolina is on the clock.

4:40pm Fans in Miami are already castigating Cam Cameron for not taking Quinn. Here's a comment from the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

gobrwns says...
And God Smiles upon "Cleveland" Thank you!!!!
Go Browns!!!

I think Browns fans are dancing right now.

4:32pm Kansas City selects Dwayne Bowe, WR from LSU. They need another target besides Tony Gonzalez. Bowe can block for the running game. Good pick. That's 3 players from LSU in the 1st round. New England is on the clock.

4:26pm Well, were down to the last 10 picks of the 1st round. And, surprise, surprise, New England has 2 of them. Once again, I'm shocked. I'll start the rumor now: Belichek is talking about retiring after this season. Really. He is. That may make the draft a little more fair in the future.

4:19pm Marshal Faulk had a great line, "All he'll (Quinn) have to do is to look at his left tackle and say, 'You got more money than me. Protect me.'"

4:17pm Finally, something notable: Cleveland has traded a 1st rounder next year and a 2nd this year for Dallas' pick. It's a bit much, but Cleveland now has their OL stalwart and their QB of the future. Cleveland selects Brady Quinn. Not a bad days' work. Kansas City is on the clock.

4:05pm No fireworks in this draft so far. Everyone seems content to stand pat. I wonder how much the salary cap has to do with that.

4:04pm No trade. Jacksonville selects Reggie Nelson, S from Florida. Still no UM players selected. Somehow, that's just not right. Dallas is on the clock.

4:02pm Jacksonville could clean up in this draft if they swing a trade with Cleveland. Cleveland wants Quinn and appears to be trying to trade their 2nd and 3rd round picks to get him. They might be giving up a lot, but after picking up Joe Thomas to solidify their line, getting Quinn at the 21st pick seems like a good deal.

3:58pm The Giants select Aaron Ross, CB from Texas. Good pick. Not many surprises. Jacksonville is on the clock.

3:55pm The Giants are on the clock. They have running back issues due to the retirement of Tiki Barber. They also have secondary issues. I'm saying they go defense.

I cut this in half because it was getting a little long. There are only about 2 hours to go.
