Liveblogging the 1st Round of the NFL Draft (part 1)

3:51pm Steven Mariucci called Michael Griffin a character pick. Oddly enough, he used a higher-rated S from the University of Miami as an example of someone that was dropping due to character issues. Character issues with a player from Miami? I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you.

3:49pm Tennessee selects Michael Griffin, S from Texas. Another possible reach. I'd like to see the papers in Nashville tomorrow. The Giants are on the clock.

3:44pm The talk has started about Cleveland or Miami trading up from the 2nd round to get Brady Quinn. Miami does have 9 more draft picks, but doesn't have a lot of cap space. Cleveland would be the most likely club to try this technique.

3:36pm The Bengals select Leon Hall, CB from Michigan. Solid pick. Boy, you can say that a lot today. Like I said, no one is swinging for the fences. This is why the Jets moved up to get their man at CB. Denver might have the most questionable call moving up to get a player that they would probably have had anyway. Miami would be #2 by taking Ted Ginn, Jr. The Titans are on the clock.

3:28pm Denver finally selects a player from the National Championship team - Jarvis Moss, DE from Florida. Solid pick, but I'm not sure they needed to move up to get him. The Bengals are on the Clock.

3:26pm Denver has traded up for Jacksonville's pick at number 17. The talk is about defensive help. Jacksonville and Denver swap 1st rouders and Jacksonville gets a 3rd and a 6th.

3:21pm Crazy though time: Could Cleveland or Miami end up with a steal getting Quinn in the 2nd round? Doubtful. But now, some commentators on the NFL Network are starting to talk about Quinn's "2nd Round Grade" on accuracy. If that's the case, why was he being propped up as a competitor with Jamarcus Russell anyway?

3:15pm Jacksonville is on the clock as we move into the 2nd half of the 1st round. These teams will start to draft the best player available, as opposed to making "need" picks.

3:13pm Green Bay picks Justin Harrell from Tennessee - DT. And a groan goes up from the crowd. He had a torn bicep in 2006. Not that Green Bay didn't need a DT, but this isn't a "win now" pick.

3:12pm The problem with Green Bay taking a running back is that it seems like the consensus is none of the running backs left are 1st round caliber. Another Wide Receiver for Farve to throw to would be the next choice.

3:06pm I still think Quinn doesn't make it past the Chiefs at 23.

3:02pm Pittsburgh takes a LB to replace Joey Porter. Lawrence Timmons from Florida State. He's the first player from one of the big-3 Florida schools to be taken today. Green Bay is on the clock. I think they're looking running back.

2:56pm Darrelle Revis is selected by the Jets. CB. I hope he's worth it. Quinn loses another $1.5 mil.

2:53pm The Jets were just put on the clock. I don't think they're going for Quinn, but we'll see. 1st trade of the day. I don't think we're going to see many. Carolina trade a 1st and a 6th round pick for a 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th round picks. That's expensive.

2:43pm St. Louis takes a Defensive End. Adam Carriker from Nebraska. 6-6 and 292. Apparently he's very tall and strong. He could be a monster coming off the end or serve double duty as a tackle. Good pick. Boy, the personnel departments seem to be swinging to make contact. Not many home runs, but not many swings and misses either. Carolina is on the clock, and there has been some speculation that they could take Brady Quinn to compete with DelHomme and David Carr. I don't believe that. I'm going on record right now saying that KC will end up with Quinn.

2:35pm Would you ever have thought that at the 12th pick, there would be more players taken from Louisiana (2) than any other state?

2:29pm Buffalo takes a running back? Marshawn Lynch from California. He's an all-around back. Maybe a little high, but a solid pick. St. Louis is on the clock.

2:24pm San Francisco picked a Linebacker from Mississippi - Patrick Willis. Solid pick. One of the announcers mentioned that Brady Quinn is losing about 1.5 million per pick. Unfortunately, he's the story right now. Fortunately, the commissioner took him into the private green room with no cameras. And, as Steve Mariucci pointed out, he'll be playing for a better team when he does get drafted. Buffalo is on the clock.

2:21pm I just realized that no one from a Florida school (UF, FSU, or Miami) was taken in the top 10. I wonder when the last time was that that happened. Somebody tell me why Chris Leak isn't on anybody's top 20 list. He won a National Championship for the love of Pete

2:15pm The big story at this point is that no one traded up for Brady Quinn. I don't think he'll fall out of the 1st round. But he may be in the high 20s. Most Likely to take Quinn: Buffalo, Green Bay (if Aaron Rogers isn't the heir apparent), Kansas City (Damon Huard is the franchise QB...wait a minute), and I'll say Philadelphia (Donovan's days are numbered due to injuries). Imagine going from Charlie Weis as your coach to Andy Reid. That's almost offensive Nirvana.

2:12pm Houston didn't trade, they picked Amobi Okoye from Louisville. He's young and athletic and a pretty good pick.

2:01pm Somebody has to trade up to get Brady Quinn, right? Houston is on the clock and in the catbird seat right now.

1:57pm Miami selects Ted Ginn, WR from Ohio State. Big crowd reaction. Quinn is going to fall a few more places. Not a bad pick, and Miami needed some Wide Receiver help. They're also going after Trent Green.

1:52pm Miami has a lot of needs, mostly due to Cam Cameron and Randy Mueller blowing up the team, but they have 10 picks. It wouldn't be a stretch for them to pass on Quinn, but I expect them to take him.

1:45pm Atlanta selected Jamaal Anderson, DE from Arkansas. Defensive help, but I'm surprised that they didn't go with the Louisville guy. Miami is on the clock, and the NFL Network guys are saying that Quinn might even get passed up by the Dolphins.

1:39pm Atlanta is on the clock. They could use some defensive help, and Bobby Petrino is going to take his own guy. Amobe Okoye.

1:33pm Minnesota selects Adrian Peterson. Something of a shocker. They already have Chester Taylor. That, and they're paying 7th pick money to a guy with a medical condition. They used a 1st round pick on a back-up running back? Not so sure about this one. But this means that Quinn will probably end up in Miami. I can almost hear the cheers now.

1:31pm Most of the discussion has been about how Minnesota is going to go for a DB. If he's the highest guy on their board, cool. But I'm not sure if that's the way to go.

1:21pm It looks like no trade for the Redskins. They took LaRon Landry - Defensive Back.
Minnesota is on the clock, the first team that might take Brady.

1:18pm Looking at the draft board, I don't think Adrian Peterson will make it past 16th. Green Bay needs a replacement for Ahman Green. Petersen could be that guy.

1:15pm As this plays out, it's looking more and more like Miami may end up with Brady Quinn. If that happens, good bye Daunte. I keep going back to the video comparison between Jamarcus Russell and Quinn. Quinn looked rough, especially for a Charlie Weis-coached quarterback.

1:13pm Dan Snyder had to just sit on his hands to not trade up to take Calvin Johnson. Like Al Davis, he never met a hyped-up recieved he didn't like. Although, Calvin Johnson may live up to the hype. I can see the Redskins trading down. There isn't anyone out there that's a pressing need that they would want to pay 6th position money for.

1:08pm Arizona takes Levi Brown. No real surprises so far. It looks like front offices have finally learned their lessons. Based on the number of teams that wanted him, you can't even really fault the Lions for taking another Wide Receiver. Washington is on the clock.

1:07pm Marshall Faulk just expressed concern about Adrian Peterson's medical condition. It's a broken collarbone. That's the kind of persistent injury that could doom him in the draft when there is a premium on durable running backs in the NFL.

1:04pm NFL Network reports that it looks like Arizona is going with Levi Brown from Penn State. No big surprise. I'm waiting for the Brady Quinn/Adrian Peterson update. I figure they're losing $1-2 million a year with each pick. Based on the video breakdown of Quinn, he may slide out of the top 10.

1:00pm Is it just me, or is it really weird to see Roger Goodall up at the podium announcing the picks.

12:59pm Tampa Bay takes Gaines Adams from Clemson. The discussion was about all the defensive personnel that Tampa Bay has lost in the last couple of seasons. Enjoy this one, Monte Kiffin. Arizona is on the clock - another team that's looking for O-Line help.

12:56pm Of course, the NFL Network is talking about Tampa Bay taking Gaines Adams - a Defensive Lineman. They do need some help on defense, and Adams appears to be on the phone. Wow, how much did it take to get Gruden to go defense.

12:54pm I have to admit, I like the story about Joe Thomas going fishing today. He's got his head in the right place. I bet Cleveland won't have any discipline problems with him.

12:47pm Tampa Bay has many needs. With Jon Gruden as head coach, they'll probably go offense. The biggest names seem to be going first.

12:45pm Cleveland took Joe Thomas from Wisconsin. OL it is. I think they've got a stalwart on the OL for a few years. Good pick. Adrian Peterson and Brady Quinn will lose several million dollars over the next couple of picks. Tampa Bay is on the clock.

12:42pm Cleveland is still rebuilding. Rebuilding starts with the OL. I think they're going to go that direction. This could be the start of the Adrian Peterson watch.

12:33pm Detroit took Calvin Johnson. Wow, the Lions took another WR. What is that, 12 in a row in the 1st round? NFL Network is talking about him being trade bait. They might be right. Cleveland is on the clock.

12:28pm The NFL Network talking heads are talking about the teams that may want Calvin Johnson. The Lions are apparently asking for a Herschel Walker/Ricky Williams-like price for the spot. Will Atlanta or Tampa Bay bite?

12:22pm (All times Eastern) Oakland takes Jamarcus Russell. No surprise. They need a quarterback. But, will Randy Moss agree to stay? The video breakdown by the NFL Network showed clear differences between Russell and Quinn. Based on the tape, it's a no-brainer. I guess the question was the intangibles. Russell's Bowl performance put him over the top.

Detroit is on the clock. This could be the first trade of the draft.
