Wrap-up: It was about adjustments. Devin Hester ran the kickoff back for a TD, and never touched another kickoff. Manning threw an INT on the first possesion while going deep, and then started to check down and keep drives going. The Bears never found an answer for their lack of offense. This was the game that we've expected from Manning and the Colts for the past 4-5 years. Congratulations to Manning, Dungy, and Indy. But I still think Addai is the MVP.
9:28pm EST - (4th QTR) Another INT, and Grossman looks lost. The rain did affect the game, but the Colts had just too much offense.
9:22pm EST - (4th QTR) In my opinion, it's Game Over. I'm going to watch the rest, but the Bears don't have the offense to score 2 TDs before the Colts score again.
9:19pm EST - (4th QTR) And...Grossman self-destructs. Hayden might have been out of bounds, but the INT will be a killer. I don't think there'll be sufficient evidence to overturn this one. But, I could be wrong again.
9:15pm EST - (4th QTR) Finally, a stop for the Bears. They got some pressure on Manning. No sacks for the Bears so far in this game.
9:11pm EST - (4th QTR) Once again, the Bears need a stop, then some offense. They're still in it, but no one has really made a play since Devin Hester's kickoff return.
9:07pm EST - (3rd QTR) Well...got that one wrong.
9:05pm EST - (3rd QTR) I don't think the ruling will be overturned (the Harrison catch), he didn't control the ball when he hit the ground. Jim Nantz and Phil Simms are concentrating on the feet. The judge said he was juggling the ball.
9:01pm EST - (3rd QTR) Special teams paid off for the Bears. They just had a 14 yard drive for 3 points. At least they had 1 first down. Colts 22-17.
8:55pm EST - (3rd QTR) Late hit by the Colts on the kickoff gives the Bears great field position near the Colts' 40. If the Bears were ever going to do something, now is the time.
8:51pm EST - (3rd QTR) The Bears are making mistakes. The personal-foul face mask, and running into the kicker. They escaped by only being down 22-14. Vinateri with another field goal. Can Grossman pull it together?
8:48pm EST - (3rd QTR) Colts are running all over the Bears. Rhodes has fresh legs, and the Bears are tired. A score here could put it away.
8:44pm EST - (3rd QTR) A sack. Then a fumble. He didn't lose it, but Grossman is looking very weak right now. The defense may have to score at this rate.
8:37pm EST - (3rd QTR) Vinateri hits a 24 yarder. Colts 19-14. Bears are still in it, but they have to answer here. They need 6, and they need to give the defense a rest. The Colts have done what they want to do: force Grossman to make a play.
8:32pm EST - (3rd QTR) Joseph Addai makes Urlacher miss. He leads the Colts in receptions, receiving yards, and rushing yards.
8:28pm EST - (3rd QTR) TOP is killing the Bears. Addai rips off a 10yd run.
8:23pm EST - (3rd QTR) Colts take the kickoff to almost the 40 yd line. I never thought I'd say this, but the Bears can't seem to tackle tonight.
8:05pm EST - (Half-time Show) Prince, rockin' in the rain. That was the FAMU Marching 100 in support. And yes, The Best of You is a Foo Fighters song.
7:56pm EST - (1st Half Wrap-Up) So far, I still think Joseph Addai is the MVP. The Colts have been able to move the ball in their usual scary-efficient status. But the Bears defense has put up just enough resistance to keep them in the game. The 6 turnovers are on pace to break the all-time record for turnovers in the Super Bowl for both teams: 11 (2 times). The Bears need to open the 2nd half with a stop to stay in this. If the Bears go down by 2 scores, it plays into the hands of the Colts' defense. Here's how the keys break down:
Bears:
1. Establish the run. Not so far, except for the 1 long run by Thomas Jones. They don't have Benson to pound it any more. But don't abandon the run.
2. Grossman doesn't self-destruct. No INTs, but 1 fumble. A TD pass, but no TOP. He needs to play better.
3. Urlacher confuses Manning. Not yet he hasn't. Peyton made 1 ill-advised throw. He hasn't repeated that mistake.
Colt:
1. Early pass interference call. Actually penalties have hurt the Colts more. The rain is keeping the passing game under wraps. Everyone's throwing underneath.
2. Get the ball to Dallas Clark. 2 times so far. Both for 1st downs that kept drives going. The Colts should keep this up.
3. Stop the run. Except for the 1 run by Jones, they have.
Prince is up next, gotta go.
7:53pm EST - (2nd QTR) Mark it on the calendar - Vinateri misses a FG in the Super Bowl. The Bears escaped that one, but the Colts get the ball first in the second half.
7:47pm EST - (2nd QTR) Another turnover for the Colts. The Bears need some points before halftime. And then...the Colts get the ball back as Grossman fumbles. What was that about Grossman not self-destructing?
7:46pm EST - (2nd QTR) So far, Joseph Addai is the MVP. He's running OK, but he's the Colts' leading receiver, and he's keeping the drives going.
7:39pm EST - (2nd QTR) As Thomas Jones fails to pick up a 1st down on 3rd and 4, Jim Nantz announces that the Bears have lost Cedric Benson for the rest of the game. The Bears haven't really put together a drive, yet. The ball has been in Peyton Manning's hands way too much.
7:32pm EST - (2nd QTR) Colts take the lead on a 1 yd dive by Dominique Rhodes. Colts go for 1. 16-14. Manning and Co. made that look easy.
7:28pm EST - (2nd QTR) Rain, rain, go away. Peyton Manning is still getting way too much time to throw the ball. Dallas Clark catches another one for a 1st down.
7:20pm EST - (2nd QTR) Vinateri is money. Bears 14-9.
7:17pm EST - (2nd QTR) The Colts have another good drive going. There are 2 tight-ends in for Indy, but Dallas Clark is lining up in the slot. So, it's really a 3 WR spread offense.
7:12pm EST - (End of 1st QTR) The Bears are scrapping, but need some offensive consistency. The Colts are currently winning the field position battle. But...4 turnovers in the 1st QTR? The rain is the MVP so far.
7:02pm EST - (1st QTR) Cedric Benson comes in and promptly gives up the football. That wasn't the rain. That was a monster hit.
6:59pm EST - Pizza arrives at the hotel room. Just in time.
6:51pm EST - (1st QTR) Rex Grossman gets his first Super Bowl TD pass before Peyton Manning. The Bears capitalize on a long run by Thomas Jones and a Colts turnover. Bears 14-6.
6:48pm EST - (1st QTR) That was NOT Devin Hester that fumbled on the kickoff. Another turnover, and the Colts seem to be recovering from the early special teams breakdown. And...while I'm typing...the Bears get it back. The rain continues to be the story.
6:44pm EST - (1st QTR) How did Reggie Wayne get that open? By the way, did I mention he was from the U? Fear the U! Bungled snap on the extra point makes it 7-6 Bears. The rain continues to be the story.
6:42pm EST - (1st QTR) Colts are taking the short stuff to keep the ball moving. Dallas Clark just made his first catch - for a 1st down.
6:38pm EST - (1st QTR) Rain, rain, rain. This is going to get sloppy.
6:32pm EST - (1st QTR) The Bears won all year on the strength of their defense and special teams. So far, that's how it's playing out. Peyton will adjust. But the Bears will keep up the pressure.
6:24pm EST - (Kickoff) Did I forget to mention that Devin Hester is from the U? FEAR THE U!
Bears 7-0. How will the Colts respond?
6:21pm EST - (Coin toss) Called tails. Alway call heads. Bears win the toss and will receive. Receive? I guess they're going to try to run down the Colts early. Or, will they try to surprise everyone and come out gunning with Grossman?
6:16pm EST - Drops are showing on most of the cameras. I think this favors the Bears. It'll slow down the receivers. Of course, if it gets muddy (and Dolphin Stadium can), the DBs can't cut.
6:15pm EST - Billy Joel singing National Anthem. Not bad.
6:14pm EST - Moment of silence for people killed in the recent Florida tornado.
6:09 pm EST - (Introductions) I guess the Bears are the home team - and they also run on as a team.
6:07pm EST - (Introductions) Colts come on as a team a la the Patriots. Theme song: "Won't Get Fooled Again" by the Who.
5:38pm EST - (Pre-game) CBS crew picks:
Boomer Esiason: Colts and Peyton for MVP
Dan Marino: Colts 31-24.
Shannon Sharpe: Colts 38-27.
J.B.: Colts
Cirque du Soleil is next...Is the World's Strongest Man still on?
5:32pm EST - (Pre-game) OK, I'm trying to hold off on posting too much prior to the game, but I have to say that the advertising billboard behind the CBS crew is very annoying. I'm sure they're making money off of it, but I, for one, am trying my hardest to ignore it.
5:28pm EST - (Pre-game) At least Rush agrees with me.
4:56pm EST - (Pre-game) A rain prediction seems to be the latest development. It may effect the game, but I don't see much going on on the field behind the CBS crew. Like most South Florida storms, it'll probably be short and violent, but the field will recover. Bona fides: I lived on the Gulf Coast of Florida for 8 years.
4:53pm EST - (Pre-game) ESPN is showing the World's Strongest Man competition. Never seen the barrel drag before. The Couric piece was on the Hines Ward phenomenon in Korea. Great, but focus on the game, OK?
4:43pm EST - (Pre-game) For the love of...what is Katie Couric doing on the CBS pre-game show? I guess they (that is, the CBS Evening news people) are hard up for ratings. Time to change the channel.
4:30pm EST - (Pre-game) Here are the keys to the game for me:
Bears:
1. Establish the run. If that happens, it'll make it more likely that...
2. Grossman doesn't self-destruct. He's the worst rated Super Bowl QB since Dilfer. And we know how that turned out, right?
3. Urlacher confuses Manning. It can be done. The Patriots have been the best at it.
Colts.
1. Get an early pass interference call - the one's they didn't get against the Patriots for the past few years. If that happens, the Bears' defense will have to back off.
2. Get the ball to Dallas Clark. He's the guy that Urlacher may be covering one-on-one the whole game. Any success by Clark will be a victory over Urlacher.
3. Stop the run. Is the defense for real, or did they just have a couple of good games.
4:00pm EST - (Pre-game) The Army, in its infinite wisdom, sent me on a trip this week. So, I'll be liveblogging the Super Bowl from my hotel room and fighting off the jet lag from a Frankfurt to Washington, DC trip this week.
I'll be joined by the 2 people that came on the trip with me, neither of which is a huge football fan, so this could be interesting. They were much more interested in touring the Petersburg National Battle Museum (the site of the Battle of the Crater which appears at the beginning of Cold Mountain).
Listening to some of the pregame hype, conventional wisdom puts money on the Colts. I've said the Bears from the beginning, and I'll stick with it.
I'm really looking forward to 2 things: the Prince halftime show, and Randy Cross's coverage of the Baghdad Bowl - there's a report on right now. The Camp Prosperity Colts beat The FOB Falcon Bears. Not a good sign.

This game was amazing, but ... (Below threshold)1. Posted by FD | February 6, 2007 3:14 AM | Score: 0 (0 votes cast)
This game was amazing, but more, Miami really did show that we know how to throw a party.
The next Super Bowl in Miami will be in 2010. Trust me, this is right at the corner. So start saving some money, use your miles to get some hotel reservation in advance, and come to party with us, you won't regret it.
The ambiance was great, the weather was great with 87 on Friday, even if Sunday was very strangely so rainy. We didn't have rain in Miami for weeks.
But I hope that everybody had a good time, and I invite you to come in 3 years, we will have a blast.
Regards.
