Passing of a Champion

I remember how I felt when Walter Payton died of liver cancer (liver cancer? no one gets liver cancer). He was my first football hero. I used to dive over the couch to copy his dives into the end zone.

I remember feeling a loss at the untimely death of Derrick Thomas. I remember staring open-mouthed at the screen when reading about the death of David Woodley - the first quarterback that I was able to watch take my team to the Super Bowl.

They were all professionals and high-performers. And although they didn't all win the Big Game, they were all champions.

I don't know why the news today seems to hit so hard. Maybe because of what he went through (I lost count at 4 surgeries, one of which amounted to an amputation, and 6 pins being implanted). Maybe it's because of what he could have been: a Triple Crown winner.

Sometime today, take a moment of silence and think about the loss of Barbaro.

He was a champion. Taken from us too soon.
