Yes, the SEC Championship game, the ACC Championship game, and the Big 12 Championship game are on Saturday. USC is playing UCLA for a spot in the BCS Championship. But there's another important game on Saturday: Army vs. navy.
DISCLAIMER: I'm a grad (USMA '94).
Roger Staubach says it's the biggest football rivalry.
ESPN said it was the biggest rivalry. (Until it decided OSU/Michigan was bigger)
NOTE: You have to be an ESPN Insider to read the entire story.
Army/navy may have National Championship implications sometime in the future, but I'm not holding my breath. Lately, it hasn't even been about the Command-in-Chief's trophy. When Army wins (gotta think positive) navy will still hold on to the CiC trophy because Army lost to Air Force. That's the way it's been most years.
This game has a higher cliche factor than any other in the country. The teams are playing for themselves, for respect, for their classmates, for their schools, but most importantly, they are playing for you. The Cadets and Midshipmen playing in the game and watching in the stands are the people that will lead your sons and daughters into combat. These are the people to whom you have entrusted the protection of our country and our way of life. On Saturday, they will participate in a game that represents that country and that way of life.
How they play this game is more important than who wins it. Plan and execute, play hard, play fair, and never quit. More than anything else, never quit.
Gen. MacArthur said, "Upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that upon other fields, on other days, will bear the fruits of victory."
The pride, class, and dedication of the athletes on the field is a better reflection of what the Army and navy try to instill in their soldiers and sailors than anything you see in a news report.
I'll be watching. But, then, I'm biased.
Beat navy!
