Drew Brees can tie 1 passing record and remain on track to break another this weekend.
He is currently on track to approach Dan Marino's single-season yardage record (5084 yards in 1984). Brees is currently on track for 5033 yards. For the season, he is averaging 314 ypg. He'll need to average 324 ypg for the last 5 games to match the record. Possible? He's averaged 390 ypg for the past 5 games. Which brings us to...
The record for consecutive 300 yard games is 6, accomplished by Steven Yound in 1998, Kurt Warner in 2000, and Rich Gannon in 2002. Brees is currently on a 5 game streak of 300+ yards. One more 300+ yard game would give him a share of the record.
Sean Payton is looking like a genius for going after Brees. Although, Nick Saban might look like a stooge for going after Culpepper instead of Brees, he was going on medical advice, and also chose not to get in a bidding war with the Saints (the Saints had a lot more cap room). He can also take some consolation from the performance of Joey Harrington over the past 4 games.
Marty Schottenheimer may have lost a Pro-Bowl quarterback, but keeping Rivers instead of fighting the Saints in a bidding war is also looking like a pretty good move.
