On Track to Break a Record - Passing Edition

Drew Brees has 3114 passing yards through the first 10 games. With a ypg average of 311.4, assuming he kept that pace, that would give him a total of 4982 passing yards for the season. He has passed for 908 yards over the past 2 games, including 510 against the Bengals last week. If he could keep up a 400+ yard pace over the past 6 games, he would easily break Dan Marino's record of 5084 yards in a 16 game season.

However, he would have to break some more records to get there. The record for consecutive 400 yard games is 2. Yes...2. Held by the Dans (Fouts and Marino), Phil Simms, and Billy Volek. The record for consecutive 300 yard games is 6, held by Steven Young, Rich Gannon, and Kurt Warner. Here's the NFL.com record page for passing stats.

However, the unlikelihood of Brees breaking Marino's record for the season is made almost certain for one reason: the Saints lost both games. In fact, according to the Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN), the only two QBs to throw for more yards than Brees in a two game span (Simms and Volek) also lost both of those games.

You think that Sean Payton might try to balance his offense a little more? A little more emphasis on the run might help. Last week (before Thanksgiving), 9 teams had a 100yd rusher. Those teams were 8-1. 2 of the teams played each other - Tennessee and Philadelphia. Tennesee had the more balanced attack - 32 runs/22 passes. The Eagles had a 2:1 ratio of passes to runs (61/31). Tennessee won.

In order to get back on the winning track, I can see the Saints trying to have more success running the ball. Which will probably throw Brees off track going for Marino's record.
