Torre Stays

It couldn't have been more than five minutes after the Detroit Tigers rousing upset defeat of the New York Yankees that the New York Daily News reported Yankee skipper Joe Torre would be fired.

Oops.

Perhaps they should've checked with George Steinbrenner first. In a odd press conference at Yankee Stadium where The Boss wasn't in attendence, Torre announced his own, well, non-departure from the helm. The Boss announced his support for Torre through a written statement read by a spokesperson. (Maybe George was too busy enjoying the Florida sun to come up to New York and express his unwavering support for the man who's led his franchise to 4 World Series titles and 11 straight playoff appearances.)

Torre rightfully deserves to keep his job. Anyone who's paid any kind of attention to the Yankees the last two years (and that's pretty much everyone), they should know that Torre's dealt with major injuries to and lagging performances from his multi-million dollar pitching staff with skill and cunning (and a little luck)--including major injuries to Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano. His tinkered and re-tooled a lineup that was also underperforming and hit by major injuries to Hideki Matsui in May and Gary Sheffield in April, but somehow got it going in mid-summer. All are signs of a great manager overcoming adversity and making it happen. And even The Boss has to admire that.

For that, and for all his championships, Torre deserves to ride this train to the end of his contract.

Brian Cashman. however, may not be so fortunate. But we'll leave that up to the New York Daily News to report. And that should be happening any moment now...
