Off-Season Geniuses - Which teams made the best moves

There are several intriguing personnel moves from this offseason that may prove coaches to be geniuses or fools. Here are some I'm watching:

As of Game 2...

1. Daunte Culpepper (QB) vs. Drew Brees (QB). Nick Saban and the coaching staff at Miami thought Brees would better fit their system. But, it came down to a medical decision. They felt that Culpepper would have a better chance to recover his form after knee surgery than Brees would have following shoulder surgery. The Saints laid out the big bucks for their boy Brees. Miami laid out a 2nd round draft pick and a $6 million signing bonus. Sean Payton - Genius. Nick Saban - Fool.

2. Steve Hutchinson vs. Nate Burleson. Hutchinson was signed by Minnesota (from Seattle) for $49 million. Burleson was signed by Seattle (from Minnesota) for $49 million. Thus far, Minnesota is averaging 113 ypg rushing (although only 3.4 ypc), has allowed 2 sacks in 2 games, and is 2-0. Seattle is also 2-0. Burleson has 2 receptions for 43 yards. That a 21.5 ypc average, but how smart is it to pay $49 million for a guy that has basically become a 3rd receiver? Brad Childress - Genius. MIke Holmgren - Fool.

3. Deion Branch vs. New England Patriots. This partially qualifies as an off-season move in that the Patriots refused to up Branch's money. OK, I'm tired of this Belichick guy. He has set up a system where you can plug anyone in and just keep on winning. Kind of like the way Denver produces 1000 yard rushers, except with New England, the system produces championships. New England is 2-0 without Branch. Brady's completion percentage is down to 50%, but they just keep on winning. As for Branch and Seattle - the jury's still out. But, we know Branch can catch the ball. This may be the factor that helps us determine if it's the receivers that drop the ball in Seattle, or if it's the humidity that makes the ball slick. This could also make up for the Burleson signing. Belichick - Genius (as a Dolphin fan, I really hate saying that). Holmgren - Jury's still out.

4. Mario Williams vs. Reggie Bush. I'll lay this one on the whole Texans organization. What in the world were they thinking, passing on Reggie Bush. The franchise is doomed to failure with this kind of thinking. Williams has not impressed (5 tackles and 1 assist in 2 games). Bush has had 2 good games. He reminds me of Thurman Thomas. Only 71 yards rushing, but he leads the team in receptions and receiving yardage (15 for 120). That's 191 all-purpose yards. Oh, and the Saints are 2-0. Sean Payton - Genius. Entire Texans organization - fools.

Cheap Shot time - Aaron Brooks is a bust. The Raiders are going to be awful for years to come despite having Art Shell in charge.

Later on, I'll take a look at how Antwaan Randle El is doing for the Redskins, how the Falcons don't seem to miss TJ Duckett, how (thus far) TO appears to be a non-factor for Dallas, and how Edgerrin James' importance to the "Triplets" in Indy might have been over-stated.

Any other themes out there worth watching?

Cover Your Behind Time - remember week 4 last year when Cadillac Williams was leading the NFL in rushing and Ronnie Brown hadn't done much for Miami (largely due to a hold-out)? Then Williams got hurt. By the end of the season, the general consensus was that Saban had made the right choice. Brown was a better all-around back. I will continue to update this post as the season progresses.

I'm a Patriots' fan. I agree Belichick is a genius, but I don't think that getting rid of Branch was a good idea. Given we weren't going to sign him, but we really have a hole without him at WR. We've never had great WRs and Branch wasn't great either, but he was good, and we'll definitely miss him out there...Throw this in with Aaron Brooks: the Raiders passing on Matt Leinart in the draft.
