Miami burns Dallas to win 2006 NBA title

After a grueling six game stand-off, the Miami Heat beat the Dallas Mavericks 95-92 on Tuesday night to win their first ever NBA title. After falling down 0-2 early in the series, Miami came back to win the next four games to call themselves World Champions.

Early in Tuesday night's action it seemed as if Dallas was going to take this game by storm after going up 26-12 in the first quarter, but the White Hot Heat came back to go ahead by one at the half.

As the second half began, Miami had the momentum. That momentum never left as they didn't fall behind the rest of the night. Though Dallas came close tying the game several times, they would never regain the lead. Near the end of the fourth quarter the Mavericks had many chances to go ahead, but a few costly mistakes gave them no chance. With many missed shots down the stretch and multiple turnovers, Dallas just could not find the strength to weasel their way back into the game and in the end, lost all chances of their first NBA title.

Dallas ended the night shooting a merely 37.0%, while Miami ended with a 44.9% shooting effort. Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat finished 10-18 from the floor and 16-21 from the stripe for 36 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and four steals. With those superb numbers, no one was surprised that Wade was crowned Finals MVP.

In the post-game press conference, Heat Head Coach Pat Riley commented on Wade's game. "He's making his legacy in his third year and we're so blessed to have him.

"I've never had a player like this. I have not been around a player who can absolutely, you know, at times beat five guys, and then at the same time make great plays."

These comments coming from Riley are worth a lot considering he has coached four World Championship teams and won one title as a player, making him in presence of some of the greatest players to ever play the game.

Riley may have also shocked some by declaring that, "I'd give up six of them for this one. I would trade them all in for this one." A reason for this statement could be because he had so many veterans on his roster that had not yet won a title, including Gary Payton, Alonzo Mourning, and Antoine Walker. Before Tuesday night's victory, Gary Payton was third all time in playoff games played without winning an NBA title, with 152 games during his 16 year career. Alonzo Mourning has been in the league for 13 years and Antoine Walker for 10. All of them can now relax knowing that when they retire they will have at least one ring to show for all of their efforts.

Shaq, not a stranger to the NBA finals with three previous titles, knew that he would bring the trophy to Miami. During his welcome parade back in 2004, Shaq told all of the fans that he guaranteed them a championship. "I made that promise because of D. Wade, I knew he was a special player...I know that being on a championship caliber team you got to have a great one, two punch, and D. Wade is a fabulous player," he explained in the post-game press conference.

Although everyone was praising D. Wade for his marvelous play, they all made clear that this was a collective team effort. "We did it together. Like coach said and like we all been saying, it's been 15 strong," Wade remarked in the post-game press conference. "15 strong" has become the Heat's play-off slogan in reference to all fifteen players on their roster.

With the Heat celebrating, the Mavericks were left questioning. What went wrong? What if they hadn't given up the big leads? What if the ball would have bounced their way in games three and five?

In a somber post-game press conference, Dirk Nowitzki explained, "It's tough right now. You play your heart out for eight, nine months every night and give it your best, and play all the way to the middle of June and then you make it to the final, to the big stage, and then go home second is just tough. I mean, right now it's a tough one to swallow, but I'm sure as more time goes by we can be proud of what we did this year."

In a much more lively conference, Mavericks Head Coach Avery Johnson expressed how prod he was of his team. "I just told them how much I love them, through thick and thin. I love them through a 13 game winning streak, the three game losing streak in the regular season, this four game losing streak.

"I told them that a lot of teams have to go through this. This is really going to hurt this summer and I hope it makes them work out harder. It makes me a better coach because I am willing to try it again."

After the game in the locker room Jason Terry of the Mavericks expressed that "we definitely gave it our all." Unfortunately their all wasn't good enough this year, but there will always be the next year, and the year after that. With an owner like Mark Cuban and the devoted fans that they have gained, Dallas is sure to be a strong force for many seasons to come.

Good use of stats. I also enjoyed the background you gave on both teams and the battle that they went through in Game 6. Well done.
