Today NFL.com has a poll that (rather predictably, I admit) I'm going to blog about:
Who is the best quarterback in the NFC South? 36%: Jake Delhomme 34%: Drew Brees 26%: Michael Vick 4%: Chris Simms(61893 voters at 8:51am EDT on 5/24/06)
Just goes to show you how many Bucs fans there are.
My selection was Jake Delhomme. Despite his occasional tendency to throw a wild pass straight into the arms of a defender, Delhomme has been the most consistent QB of the four NFC South starters. Plus, he's played in a Superbowl and not cracked under the pressure.
Drew Brees is a talented QB, no doubt, but my biggest knock against him is his consistency. He had a great 2004/5, followed up by a decent 2005/6. I'm sure he'll lead the Saints to at least 8 wins, but some of those wins won't come because of Brees. They'll come because of the players around him.
Mike Vick is probably one of my most and least favorite quarterbacks. He's exciting to watch and he really can throw the ball well. It's just that he has no accuracy. It's all well and good that you can throw the ball 20 yards, but that's not going to help your receivers if the ball is ten feet over their heads. He needs to learn to bring down his passes and put a little more touch on the ball. The Falcons don't keep drafting receivers because their receiving corps sucks; they keep drafting receivers because they hope that, eventually, one of their receivers will be able to levitate ten feet into the air to catch Vick's wayward passes. The Falcons will not win a Superbowl with this guy.
As for Chris Simms? He's got the tools and he's got some ability, but he hasn't been a starter consistently and for long enough for us to adequately judge him. He's not bad; he's just not well-known enough.
If I had to pick one of these QBs to lead my team, though, it would be Delhomme. He has the experience, the consistency, and the leadership qualities that a team needs to succeed.

I think your statement prior to this one was more accurate, but this one is just not a very persuasive argument. Judging whether or not who's the best quarterback is not a popularity contest; it's based on performance. If it were, Vick would have finished well ahead of Delhomme and Brees. Seems to me the people who answered the poll got the gist of the question.
If and when Simms does get a better line in front of him and, if it's possible, a healthy Cadillac Williams running the ball week in and week out, he's fully capable of putting up big numbers as evidence by his big performance against the 'Skins last season.
Otherwise, I agree. Delhomme is the Tom Brady of the NFC. The guy just knows how to win. He'll be scary with Keyshawn and Smith to choose from. But the Panthers have health issues at RB...even more so than the Bucs.

A healthy Cadilliac, a new stud receiver (a healthy David Boston), a healthy Michael Clayton, Joey Gallaway, and Ike Hilliard, as well as a mix of returning and new O-linemen, I think the Bucs are the team to beat, Simms finally showed last season that he has finally gotten what a Gruden offense is about. They won the NFC-S because they are able to beat the NFC-S. Vick sux, has never been and will never be an NFL QB, make him a slot receiver and give him the ball 2 out of three plays, then you'll have a weapon. The Panthers can't stay healthy and have a one deminsional (Smith) offense. Forget about the Saints, New Orleans has.
