Self-appointed MLB Commissioner Bud Selig announced yesterday that there would be no celebration when (there's no 'if' about it) Barry Bonds breaks Babe Ruth's home run record for left-handed hitters. And please take note, I actually (gulp) agree with Bud for a change.
There shouldn't be a celebration, as Selig put it, "for the second or third time in." Translation (because it's needed for BudSpeak): MLB doesn't celebrate guys who are 4th, 3rd or even 2nd on any all-time record list; they only celebrate breaking the top record, like 61 homers or 262 hits. MLB has been consistent on this for years.
In fact, Selig went so far as to say that "There's nothing to read into this." Again (damnit!), Bud's right.
But, naturally, all the media reports have tried to link or imply that the decision not to have a celebration is based on the steroid investigation of Bonds and others, as evidenced by the mere mentioning of the investigation in the same breath with a possible celebration.
Re-damn-diculous.
