...in the NFL.
First, the good news: the Bengals have re-signed FB Jeremi Johnson to a long-term contract. In this world where FBs aren't getting much love, Johnson continues to shine in making room for Rudi Johnson to run through defenses. I have believed for a long time that teams who continue to use a FB in front of their runners will continue to see their RBs rack up thousand-yard seasons. It's not a perfect thought, but it's pretty good. I mean, sure, you have guys like Shaun Alexander and LDT who do just fine without a FB, but it's always nice to have some help back there.
And now, the bad news: Brett Favre won't have to make a decision for months, as the Packers are willing to push back his roster bonus due date until July, it seems. This is worse than waiting for Ross Perot to run.
By the way, at the end of that second article, you will note that Jon Kitna is the probable starter for the Lions, even though they also brought in former Arizona QB Josh McCown. I'm a fan of McCown, who is mobile, pretty accurate, and can definitely throw the long ball, but by the same token, remember that Jon Kitna is a proven starter in this league. Kitna's 33 years old, though, so he's not the long-term solution. Kitna did an excellent job as a model for Carson Palmer, who came into the league as a starter the next year and did very well quarterbacking the Bengals; I can see McCown learning a lot from Kitna and, in a year or two, being the starter for the Lions.

Shaun Alexander had Mack Strong blocking for him this year. LT had Lorenzo Neal. Not trying to nitpick. I agree with your point about needing a good fullback.
